Last Thursday,Sept 4th, 2025, was one for the books
I showed up at Buoy 35, in Blue Point, for a 1 PM lunch, at around 12.30, my typical “30 minutes before reservation”, to make sure everything is going in the right direction …
I made the reservation about a month ago
I had called them twice, to reconfirm our reservation for 20 people, on Wednesday, and the day before..
Nadda, nuttin, zilch, no answer
But, anyhow, shortly after I showed up, a fellow Luncher arrived, not far behind me
At least I had a witness, as to what was about to unfold.
As I pulled up, the was a large Beer truck taking up way too much space, in their parking lot
But, I squeezed my car into the lot, parked the car, then called them again, as something felt amiss, as there were no cars already in the parking lot, not from Employees, or anyone else..
Kind of odd, as they open at 12 noon ..
The beer delivery guy knew as much as we did, as he first said he was just delivering beer to the back door…
When he went back there, he saw a note that said they were closed for the day,.. and for him to lock the gate, as he left
So, I’m in a quasi panic, as 18 other people were on their way to this place for lunch
I immediately called Drift 82, in Patchogue to see if they could handle 20 people for lunch, on a 20-30 minutes notice
She put me on hold, for one of the the longest 30 second pauses, in my “being on hold” history
She returned to say, Yes, but, we had to sit inside
LOLOLOL I would have kissed her right there, if she were closer ..
As my heart rate decreased to an acceptable level, I popped another Metoprolol, and a 162 aspirin, thanked her, and told her to be on the lookout for some very confused people…. She chuckled
I asked my fellow luncher to start calling others, any of the others, that she had phone numbers for, then to please go to Drift 82 and wait for people, as I would try my best to contact everyone else, by phone, from in front of Buoy 35.
I also, quickly sent out a group text, informing everyone of our dilemma, but was unsure, who was even able to read it, to know to go to Drift 82, as they were probably driving
So, I diligently started calling people, individually..
Seven people into the phone calls, 5-6 more Lunchers showed up at Buoy 35, and I directed them over to Drift 82, others had seen the group text I sent out, and had already headed over to Drift 82..
Auspicious start to a lunch, wouldn’t you say ??? lol
In any case, our Lunch at Drift 82 was wonderful
They are so friendly, the food is good, plentiful, and tasty ..
The setting is very “Long Island” in the Summer, with the boats going back, and forth, and the working Marina, across the canal
The waitress, Marie was great, and I will write her boss a special note about her service
If Marie’s bosses are reading this, please giver her a raise !!!!
It pays to stay calm, in the face of mistakes made by establishments
No yelling, screaming, do you know who I am? attitude , just move on…
They will float to their own water level
There’s plenty of places who do right by customers….
Drift 82 is definitely one of them.
Our group never goes into “Karen” mode
They took everything in stride, and just moved on, like nothing happened
The Buoy faux pas was barely mentioned at Lunch
We had a very pleasant lunch, with the normal banter, and conversations
After Drift 82, we went to The Oar, for Happy Hour, one of the best Happy Hours in that area….
Can’t wait to do again
