This place is beautiful and has a great German atmosphere. The owners and the chef are so welcoming and you can tell they really care about the business. There is even a gift shop at the entrance with some cool knick-knacks.
The food is an incredible price and insanely delicious. The portions are huge, honestly like pre-COVID levels. You’re getting at least 35 dollars worth of food for 18 bucks. They also give you these complimentary pretzel rolls that were delicious. The imported Weissbier is incredibly cheap too, so just coming here for some beers would be a great idea.
Keep in mind that the wait for food was quite long, about 2 hours. I know some reviewers say that is a problem and I understand why, but the food is worth the wait for both the taste and the size. The amount of extra food they give you on top of what you actually order is more than what you’d pay for in some other places.
Go into this expecting an hour or two of just drinking and chatting with friends or other tables and you will leave incredibly happy. The music is fun and the owners are so chatty and friendly, they really make the whole experience.
I had visited Bavaria last year and had been hungry for a good schnitzel ever since. We decided to check this out on a Sunday afternoon. They had real German beer from Paulaner and Bitburger! We had a chance to chat with the owner while enjoying our drinks. We got to hear all about the history of the building back to 1875 when it was a pub and general store. Allegedly John Dillinger and his crew stopped here for some drinks during their heyday. The original 1875 bar had been well restored and kept. Even the original Mercury mirrors are in place.
Every wall has something interesting to see. Paintings of German hillside, steins from around the globe, even a couple suits of armor! To be honest, it feels more like you’re eating at someone’s home instead of a restaurant.
The Food: we started with pretzel bread and mustard. It was amazing. The pretzel bread was cooked to perfection and the mustard was horseradish type which I love.
For main course we got alpenschnitzel and Munich schnitzel. Both of them were delicious and huge! We also got potato salad which was served warm as is traditional. Definitely made from scratch and delicious!
What you should know:
The wait might be longer than you are used to. All of the food is made from scratch which takes time. In traditional German restaurants, it’s normal to enjoy a round of drinks or two before your food comes out. Gives you time to visit with your friends and enjoy the experience. Likewise, it’s perfectly acceptable to stick around for a while after dinner.
There is also a small gift shop and a dance hall which is for rent!
Pictured is: Munich Schnitzel, buttered spatzl, potato pancake with applesauce, and the brat bites appetizer (which I definitely recommend).
The schnitzel was excellent. The extensive collection of memorabilia was still there.
There were only two people working the restaurant. Both were polite friendly, and working their tails off.
There was a birthday party of fourteen before me. All were served, with refills, and appetizer. Their orders were cooked first. And served first. First come…
I got my meal one hour and forty minutes after I ordered it. As I said, the schnitzel was excellent. It took me about twelve minutes to finish it.
The other comments were correct. This old building needs fumigation. The flies were persistent. I’m from an earlier age, where we tolerated such things as normal for a unique dining experience. Younger people would have left immediately.
This is not the staff’s fault. Management is not doing a proper job. Staffing and health need addressing.
My total was $21.97 with tax. I paid $30, cash. I hope that was enough. The poor guy was taking the bullet for his bosses.
Hours and menu are attached.
