Step back in time to 1867 when the Draper Brothers founded their renowned meat house in the heart of Madison. Their passion for quality and taste quickly made them the region’s go-to destination for the finest cuts of meat. Today, we honor their legacy with Draper Brothers Chophouse, a restaurant that blends the traditions of the Midwest with Italian flair.

The restaurant was packed for New Year’s Eve as expected. Staff were very busy and working hard to accommodate everyone. We certainly understood that they were a bit behind on reservations and appreciated their transparency about this to set expectations. The bar and those gathering became overcrowded and somewhat interfered with tables in the bar area. We ended up being seated at a small table in the corner of the bar against a cold window on a very windy night. Not the end of the world, but not an ideal space.
Our server was so friendly, but you could tell was overworked. She had most if not all of the tables in the bar area. She was moving constantly, and her ability to check on us more often and be attentive was not possible.
The star of the show was definitely the house mashed potatoes. If you are a rosemary lover, don’t think twice! My filet had good flavor, but was not cooked evenly. About half of the steak was medium well. The other half was closer to medium, but that is being generous. Overcooked for sure. The server was incredibly apologetic and offered to provide us with a free dessert.
Three all gender bathrooms for this restaurant is not enough on a busy night. The wait was significantly more than I expected. They were very clean and luxurious!
I would return again, but would most likely consider dinner at the bar or a different table upstairs.
The wine list is one of the most impressive I have seen – whether you’re hosting a group or winding down the day solo, there is something for everyone. I’m very particular about the steakhouses I frequent, and I will 100% be a regular customer.
If you’re in the Madison area (or even visiting), be sure to put Draper Brothers on your list – you will not be disappointed!
Food was ok. Nothing to go out of your way for. Service was did not meet my expectations in any way. I was really shocked again. When serving my soup, the your woman reached over my friend across the table. Really? Quite a few service issues. Just a all around disappointing visit. I wish them the best of luck, but it will be awhile before I go back.
Management tried to ignore us, standing in the kitchen for an hour cause this place is small. Maybe this is the standard around these parts but unacceptable in my mind. Do better. Madison is a tough place to survive in the restaurant biz and I cant image this one star will help. Never coming back no matter how good the food is. Doesn’t matter how many bottles of wine or gift card you throw at me. This was an all around F-. Servers have been great. Im still waiting on my food and its 10:45. 11:05 I left. Heritage house is a nice pub. Go there instead. This place sorely need better management
