Ask for Adan as your server!!!!! He was fantastic and so helpful with the menu. My husband and I celebrated our Anniversary here, and we were very pleased with the food. Only complaint would be the beef in the yaki beef entree was more fatty than he liked. We would definitely go back and try other dishes. The phoenix roll was our top favorite right behind the sweet miso yellow tail roll. The fun drink pictured is express indigo starry night so good!!! Adan knows his stuff so he won’t steer you wrong, his personality was so friendly and caring, truly enjoyed him!

We spent our early Mother’s Day dinner at Douzo Sushi in Boston, a place we’ve returned to many times over the past 10 years. And once again, it did not disappoint.

The food is consistently excellent—fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. This time, we ordered the sample boat, which is a perfect way to enjoy a wide variety of sushi and sashimi in one sitting. Every piece was crafted with care, from the rich toro to the delicate salmon rolls, and the plating was as stunning as ever.

The atmosphere at Douzo is both elegant and relaxing. Though the staff has changed over the years, the service remains warm and welcoming. You can always feel the genuine hospitality, which enhances the dining experience.

We’ve especially enjoyed their creative specialty rolls in the past, but the sample boat really stood out this time. It’s a great choice for anyone looking to explore a range of offerings.

If I were to suggest one small area for improvement, it would be to reflect a bit more of the restaurant’s cultural roots in the service team. Years ago, a Taiwanese waiter gave us fantastic recommendations and left a lasting impression. Having more staff with Asian heritage might further enhance the authentic feel of this Japanese dining experience.

A bonus worth mentioning: they validate parking for the garage next to the restaurant—definitely a plus in downtown Boston.

Overall, Douzo remains one of our favorite spots in the city. I’d highly recommend it to any sushi lover looking for quality, consistency, and a touch of sophistication.

Wonderful Japanese restaurant steps from the Orange Line Back Bay subway stop. Close to many other shops on the walk to Tremont Street. The restaurant offers a wide choice of Japanese fare. The atmosphere is bright, cheerful, and quiet. I enjoyed the lunch Bento box of teriyaki salmon, my choice of spicy tuna roll, and salad. The salmon was perfectly prepared and delicious. The tuna roll was fresh and tasty with the accompanying wasabi and ginger. The meal, with my choice of green tea, was a perfect choice for me and I truly enjoyed the experience.

Absolutely fantastic! Everything we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and very tasty. If you ever visit Duozo Sushi, you HAVE to try the XO Toro. I cannot put into words how delicious it was, it’s an experience in and of itself!

Very good sushi place but at back bay prices. Started with the very tasty tuna tataki. Then ordered 2 rolls both very good, the salmon jalapeño and sweet miso yellowtail

We chose this restaurant to celebrate my wife’s birthday, and they absolutely did not disappoint. My wife is a huge fan of sushi but has a shellfish allergy, which can often make dining out stressful. However, the chefs and staff here were incredibly accommodating and took her allergy seriously. They deliberately seated us in an allergy friendly area and took the time to patiently explain all of her safe menu options, which gave us incredible peace of mind. Beyond the phenomenal service, the food was as fresh as could be, and the drinks were completely on point. This was hands-down one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in a long time. Highly recommend!!!

Food is truly mediocre. Chicken Teriyaki was dry and bland. Also the rice tasted like leftover rice. The $45 sushi plate was so mid and not worth the money. The only thing that tasted great on the plate was the tuna. However, the crispy rice was the only thing on the plate that I would say was good. The sushi rice was served cold and was too big. Would probably try elsewhere for some good sushi.

Great sushi place, very tasty with a Avery good looking presentation of the food on the plate. The place is fancy even if the location is not super great. This is a place I will come back for sure. Service is great and people working there are very nice and friendly. The menu is wide and the selection of fish (sushi and sashimi) are great and especially the table shared items.

Douzo presents itself with the posture of a destination sushi restaurant, but the experience leans overly pompous relative to its execution.

The menu reads ambitious, yet the food rarely justifies the tone. Fish quality is acceptable, but preparations often feel burdened by excess—sauces, garnishes, and presentation choices that call attention to themselves without adding clarity or depth. Rather than letting ingredients speak, dishes feel dressed up, blurring flavor and intent. The result is sushi that looks more serious than it tastes.

Service reinforces that imbalance. Interactions can feel formal to the point of stiffness, prioritizing performance over comfort. There’s an air of importance that doesn’t translate into anticipation or warmth, leaving the experience feeling managed rather than hospitable.

The room mirrors the attitude: sleek and controlled, but lacking ease. It signals “occasion” without delivering the substance that earns it. Instead of focus or intimacy, the atmosphere feels self-conscious.

Verdict:
Douzo suffers from trying too hard. When ambition outpaces execution, the result is an experience that feels inflated rather than refined. Two stars—for effort and presentation, not for balance or restraint.

Food great. Fancy with very good service. It is 20% more pricy than other similar places. Location great. Food is very good. Had a few sushi rolls and other sides
