I haven’t tried their lunch and dinner options yet, but am looking forward to soon.
Tonight I had NY Steak and Shrimp dinner special. It was very good. Cooked perfectly, served with fried plantains and rice/beans. $30.00. I would say it was worth it. But, the service tonight was not worth the aggravation. Ended up making my whole table, including me, angry. The restaurant was about 60% full. We had to ask several times for chips and salsa. After a long wait we finally got chips and salsa. Another 20 minutes in we were asked if we were ready to order. My eldest sister was the first asked and she said she is not ready but will be, ask the others. The waitress walked away instead of taking orders. 12 minutes later she came back. Ok. My other sister asked for Steak Loredo. 30 or so minutes later our meals came. The steak Laredo ended up arriving as a steak burrito (a sound alike). Once that got corrected, we all ate. My steak was pretty cold by that time and hard to cut with a butter knife. Not a steak knife in the place. The neglected service continued. We were almost the last table in the place. All the other tables that arrived after us were served and had left long before us. The servers were not mean or rude, it was the lack of attention and long periods in between. Almost $200 for the 4 of us. I was sorry I recommended Dos Amigos for a family dinner. Although two of us did enjoy our food.
May 2021:
I had the fajitas combo with shrimp, chicken and beef. It was ok, just fine for a neighborhood place. Price was OK, not overly expensive but El Paso in Springfield is a much better deal with same quality of food and drink. This restaurant is near Costco and located near homes and makes a great place for the businesses and homes nearby. I will go back again which is the best compliment I could give a restaurant. Very busy and service was reasonable with the amount of take out orders and in restaurant going on during a busy Friday night. Check it out if you can.
When I arrived I was greeted kindly and asked for a menu to place a to-go order. Without looking at the prices while ordering, I ordered the steak & chicken fajitas and a bowl of chicken fajita soup (one of my favorites, when done right!). When the total came up to $36, I was shocked. I said to myself – “whatever, I’m getting paid to work today when I’d normally be home, so screw it! Might as well treat myself.”
After waiting a bit, I decided to wander around the restaurant and get photos of the place for my review. While doing this I found that the restaurant was quite expansive, and I then understood why the cost of the food was so high. This place is HUGE! Among its many rooms and seating areas, it even has outdoor seating! Awkwardly, when I was taking one of my last photos, a team member happened to be coming out of the hallway near the restroom and saw me taking the photos. We awkwardly exchanged a brief smile before he asked me if I wanted him to pose for the photos… As if getting caught taking photos of the restaurant wasn’t awkward enough?!! I politely declined and excused myself.
When my food was ready, I returned to my work area and I was delighted to see they included 2 pairs of plastic-ware and napkins. This was GREAT because, being clumsy, I dropped one of the spoons halfway thru preparing the food to be consumed. I would have been devastated if I had no other way to enjoy the soup than with a fork and messy slurping – so “THANK YOU!!” Dos Amigos crew!
Since it was still hot and ready, I had the steak and chicken fajitas first. They had included guacamole (not my thing!), sour cream, Pico de Gallo, lettuce (under the sour cream), onions, peppers, black beans, and 3 tortillas. They also included a bag of tortilla chips.
The steak was quite chewy and tough, but very flavorful. The chicken was amazing and had great taste to it. The onions and peppers were plentiful and enjoyable. The pico was great. The black beans were extremely watered down, however, that liquid added to the flavor of the fajita, because it gave it a juicy addition of flavor, while everything else was in there with it. Rating these fajitas, I would give them a B+ for all they were worth. They were “up there” on the scale of best food I’ve had. The too-watery black beans and the guacamole being tossed in with Pico de Gallo killed the near-perfect score.
Sadly, the tragedy doesn’t end there! The chicken tortilla soup should have been re-labeled as “Onion Soup with Chicken”. My god – there were SO MANY ONIONS! They must have set a whole onion on the chopping block and crushed the whole thing and added chicken chunks and broth. I’ve never seen so many onions in one dish. I started pulling a few spoonfuls of onions and avocado slices out – by the time I was done half of a to-go tray was filled with them! To add to all this, the “crispy tortilla strips” that were in the soup were just mushy tortilla bits. If the staff are reading- include the tortilla strips on the side, and let the customer add their own strips. It’s better to have them add it than them turn to mush in a soup your customer was supposed to enjoy. Lastly, the taste of the soup was not that great. It had a pretty bland taste, and wasn’t that salty. With the jalapenos being in the soup I expected it to have a bit of heat to it, but I couldn’t taste any peppers or spices at all. Plenty of fat floating on top though! The chicken was the saving grace to this. The chicken chunks were large, tender, and flavorful. Finally, I would say leave out the cheese. It’s gross and contributes nothing to the dish. Would I order this again? No. It’s too bland.
In conclusion, I would say this. The meal was amazing. Was it the best I’ve ever had? No. Does it rank highly among all the places I’ve ever been? You bet! But, the steak & chicken fajitas aren’t “$24” chicken fajitas, and the soup is a $4 soup at best.
Pros: Excellent service, excellent carnitas fajitas, excellent tortilla soup, excellent green salsa hot sauce.
Cons: it’s on the expensive side for this quality Mexican food (i could have whipped up these $13 enchiladas in a half hour in my kitchen), and the tortillas chips were very mediocre.
I have had the tacos al carbon and the steak, chicken, and shrimp fajitas. I have purchased for pick up and had it delivered via Door Dash and have not been disappointed. The steak and chicken are moist and tender as if you were eating in. The tortillas were fresh and the guac, sour cream, rice, beans, and salsa all tasted as if they were freshly made and packaged well in neat separate containers on a separate platter as not to turn over…extra point for Dos Amigos on this consideration.
I have had their delicious horchata but still need to sample their desserts. But, I look forward to dining in. During last pick up visit, I saw customers enjoying themselves and the staff were hospitable and friendly
