In 1912, Door County merchant pioneer, Al Mickelson, built a special place for Sister Bay residents and visitors to purchase food and enjoy ice cream treats. The store became known as a source of local information in addition to excellent food and service. Today, the tradition lives on in the Door County Ice Cream and Sandwich Shoppe. With super-premium ice cream produced on site, you can enjoy any of 70+ rotating flavors, as well as a long list of sundaes and other dessert offerings. We have a long list of sandwiches, soups, salads, and pizza all made to order in a historic building lined with historic photos from the turn of the last century.

Pizza was perfectly made and baked. All ice cream is homemade. Unique and regular flavors.
Great indoor old style decor. Fast and friendly service.
Delicious high quality ice cream at still reasonable prices in an old school vibe with a clean dining area and friendly service. Next time up here we’ll definitely give the pizza a try.
Have always strived to support local especially in today’s economy and I hope for continued success & prosperity for the owner(s).
What I wanted to rate is their pizza – it is outstanding! We’ve always gotten at least one every time we visit Door County and we’ve always loved it – they have the entire process dialed in and their crust can compete easily with many of specialty pizza restaurants I’ve visited – highly recommend!
The pizza was good, I really liked the sauce they used. The garlic sticks were made on a pizza crust and covered in garlic with a little cheese. They will keep vampires away that is for sure.
The ice cream was also good and the price was not terrible. I got to eat some of my wife’s sundae which was good and creamy.
Overall I would stop here again the next time I am in the area.
Long time favorite location for delicious sandwiches, but it was a disappointment today.
We ordered two King of The Hill sandwiches (10.95 with a bag of chips). Unfortunately they were more like bottom of the barrel today. The buns were hard and stale. I could not bite into the top bun at all and ended up just taking it off because it was inedible. There was plenty of good quality meats and cheeses on the sandwich. The problem — in addition to the stale bread — is the whole sandwich is much smaller than it used to be and there were barely any toppings. I had a tiny half slice of tomato end on each half of my sandwich, a few slivers of red onion and 1 lettuce leaf. I would have not used those tomato pieces on a sandwich I made at home let alone one I was making to sell.
My husband told me that while he was waiting for our sandwiches to be made a woman who was dining inside came back to the sandwich counter to request more lettuce for her sandwich. She remarked she had very little tomato and onion as well. So this was not an isolated incident today just for us.
The location is nice. The restaurant is clean and pretty with lovely decorations.
The outdoor picnic area is idyllic. The new garage mural is adorable!
This has always been a “must” place to stop when in Door county but after today it will probably be a drive by. We were so disappointed we didn’t even get ice cream!
Update:
Thank you for the reply!
I appreciate the time and effort it took.
It’s good to know it’s okay to ask for more toppings. I would have probably asked for a different bun (and better tomato slices) but we took carry out so it wasn’t possible — nor could we ask for more toppings.
You are implying the bread could not possibly have been stale. It was hard. I could not bite into it.
The previous time we were there the door county cherry ice cream had crystals as if it had thawed then refrozen. I should have complained at the time but we were already out the door. So not too excited about the ice cream there either.
