Such a great burger!! Plus, I was totally in the mood for a peanut butter milkshake and the staff totally delivered on that one. I’m not sure about the negative reviews that state that the staff weren’t attentive because they had no problem acknowledging me and making sure that my order was taken. Plus, they were attentive to everyone else in the restaurant as well. They were super friendly and the food came out fast and hot! I haven’t been to Dons Original in quite some time, but a friend of mine had recommended their burgers so I obviously had to give it a chance- And I’m so glad I did. I ordered the onion rings crispy just to try something different, so if they seem well done, that was my intention. Next time I’ll get the onion rings cooked regular to try it out! This was a fantastic lunch date with my husband, and we will be back!
Oh!! And PS: The homemade hot sauce and the homemade barbecue sauce are simply amazing!! Talk about the magic sauce! ✨

Disappointed. Got the sausage egg and cheese croissant breakfast sandwich. Very greasy and salty. Tasted like a hamburger. Grill should be cleaned between different meats. Did not taste good. Just got a mouthful of grease and salt! DD has a better sausage egg and cheese croissant. When I opened the sandwich, the egg yolk dripped all over my pants and it was a mess all over the place! The cook looked unhappy there! So obviously the food wasn’t cooked with love nor did it taste like it. The latte was ok. The potatoes lacked the salt that he overused in the sandwich.
Update went back today for lunch and so much better than breakfast was. There was a different cook and the food was not greasy or salty. It actually was delicious. The chili was a little too spicy for me but the French fries were hot and so good! The cheeseburger was so good! The coffee was good. The Mac and cheese was ok. But everything was delicious. Much better experience. The workers were so friendly.

Prices go up but the delicious food continues. The new owners are tweaking the eating experience with outdoor seats in a more traditional restaurant arrangement.

I’ve always loved this place and now it’s even better with the new owners. The quality of the food has gotten even better and they’ve added beer and wine; however my drink choice is always a chocolate malted shake – made with the best custard in WNY as far as I’m concerned. I shared a plate with a friend last night cause I really needed some comfort food. I was very comforted and had a great night’s sleep.

This place certainly is not Don & Bob’s any longer. Watch the posted menu prices. For a ground round it says the hard roll is included – it is NOT. $2 for a slice of cheese? It’s already $9 for a ground. Once you add cheese and a hard roll you’re up to at least $13. The burger didn’t have very much flavor, even coming off the char grill. A final kick with this was the fact that the bun wasn’t even fresh. $7 for a a order of fries (and I didn’t even get a full order with my burger basket)? Even the Texas hotdog was an inferior, cheap off brand. The onion rings were pretty good, at least still homemade. I don’t mind paying for quality food, but the prices (especially for what you get) are just not reasonable. A large drink is $4,but is only about 16 ounces. Even with a refill this is still up there. I’ve been going here for at least 50 years and this is not the same place that it once was, especially with the prices. It fully understand that businesses are there to make a profit, but this is over the edge. Even if the food has been of a better quality, the prices are still unreasonable I’m sorry to say. I really hope that the (newer) owner takes note of all of this. If I’m paying (beyond) premium money for food, I fully expect it to be something special – this did not meet that expectation.
Update : we’ve been home for a while now and are both having stomach issues. Strong feelings that it’s from our lunch here.

Great burger stop down by the shoreline. Lots of nostalgia and great food. I tried the Big Plate (garbage plate). Very filling and great taste, I would get it again. It’s a little warm inside in the summertime but they have outdoor seating as well. I keep hearing the breakfast sandwich is great so I will have to try that on the weekend when they offer it!

I grew up in Rochester and my mother started taking me to Don & Bob’s (now Don’s Original) in Seabreeze in the late ’40s. The ground steak burger is an American classic. And, the hot sauce they make on the premises using a closely-guarded recipe, makes it a truly unique experience. I order my sandwich on a soft hamburger bun with everything plus extra hot sauce, and add a little ketchup for sweetness. Request their complimentary pickle slices, and if you want a side, I recommend the fried onion rings. Their motto is “Where Quality Predominates”. Remarkably, they’ve consistently lived up to that promise for the 70 years I’ve been going there. If you’re in Rochester, this is a must stop. If you like burgers, I guarantee you will be amazed and delighted. UPDATE-1: Stopped for the first time since ownership changed some months ago. I’ve been a long-standing fan of these burgers and I’m not going to change my 5-star rating based on one visit, but I did think the experience was not quite as good as it has always been in the past under two previous owners. One example was the hot meat sauce. I encountered some inedible material in the sauce ranging in size from that of a dime to a quarter. I first thought it was plastic wrap or paper, but close examination suggested it was the dry outer layer of onion. Probably too tough to chop and certainly too tough to chew. I had to discard about five pieces of this material. Second, the burgers tasted a little drier than they have in the past. They don’t offer to cook your burgers to order, although I think you can request that if you wish, but I’ve never done so because they’ve always been juicy in the middle and a little crispy on the edges. Today’s patty’s were a bit dry. I wish them luck in working out these minor problems because this is an important institution to Rochester.

I’ve been going here since the 70’s. It’s always been great throughout the years. This is by far my favorite burger joint in Rochester. And it isn’t just nostalgia.
*Update: Now that it is under new ownership and seems to have blown up a bit, if you’re visiting, it is first to sit gets the seat. If you’re eating outside, stand along the wall and they will ask who needs to order. Proper polite protocol has always been to ask if people that were there prior to you ordered yet. This place is cozy, and gets busy quickly. Just be prepared to wait a tick for service. The food is well worth it.*
Anyone I bring from out of town, or who just had never eaten here always becomes a fan. It always seems like they have great employees, and the food is always top notch.
Also, I didn’t realize it till recently, but you can buy their meat sauce jarred and have it at home or at a picnic!

Walk up diner with indoor and outdoor seating. Also have an ice cream window which we didn’t try but the flavors looked delicious. The onion rings were absolutely fabulous. The burgers delicious, juicy and filling. The Garden Burger is a veggie burger: while a surprise he still said it was yummy.
