How this place gets any great reviews is beyond comprehension. The food and atmosphere are dismal. It’s downright depressing and uninspiring inside. I ve been there twice. The first time was on a recommendation of a friend and neither my husband nor I were impressed. Slow service. , no ambiance and bland food. The most recent was about a week ago when friends invited me for a drink before dinner elsewhere. While sitting at the bar I saw a waiter fill two glasses with water and put lemon wedges inside one glass. Then he stuck three fingers inside one of the glasses to fish out one of the lemon wedges. Next he carried those glasses over to a table and served them the water . I could not believe my eyes. If that’s what happens in the open what the hell goes on in the kitchen ? I will never step foot inside there again.

Did not disappoint! Brought my mother here for her 70th birthday for a late lunch. Picked Donohue’s because of it’s old New York charm. Food was fantastic. We each ordered the French Onion Soup and a Burger, topping mine off with the perfect not so dirty martini. Highly recommend.. but don’t tell everyone.. it felt like a hidden gem.

Old school cool! Red tablecloths, black leather booths, active senior citizens & camaraderie, wholesome food, attentive servers, excellent vibe! Highlights were chilled gin martini glass, large pork chop with applesauce, homemade carrot cake, and apple pie were delicious! We must protect this establishment at all costs! We learned about it from an elderly acquaintance and we will be back!

Old school NYC establishment. The food also is old fashioned; no hipster salads and sandwiches here. Food is okay; better locations in NYC, but a great place for a quiet and intimate meal and drinks between Bloomies and Hunter College. Outdoor seating is a plus to watch neighborhood locals go by.

Excellent meal! However, you may be disappointed if you go in expecting a Smith & Wollensky–type steakhouse. The menu skips a few of the usual steakhouse staples — no ribeye, hanger, or classic sauces like au poivre or bordelaise. The steaks they do serve are very good, but I’d call this place a chop house before a steakhouse. It’s old-school, no-frills, and proud of it — the kind of spot that serves a solid meal without pretense or pomp. It’s great for a special night out, yet completely unfussy.

Great food. But no wifi, and tight booths.
The steak was seasoned nicely, but it was a little burnt around the edges (too tough to be edible), especially for a medium well order.
Very pricey! One steak meal with two sides and a sparkling water costed $97.
But the 1950s vibe has been preserved. Overall, it was a decent spot. If you are in the area, I would recommend it.

Donohue’s is a rare find in a busy city that has not compromised on techniques and presentation from a foregone era that is not maintained much in this town. You could be from any decade and enjoy this experience (and many are from highly varied age groups who know a good thing when they see it.) Their burgers are quite good and the sides are tasty, although more seasoning throughout might be a plus.

Great experience at Donohue’s! Chris was a fantastic bartender, and the pork Chops were amazing! We’ll be back for sure.

Old school restaurant. Simple menu done well! We had a cheeseburger that came perfectly medium rare and the swiss cheese was so hot it dripped down the sides. The scrod was great! Nice and moist. It included two sides. So we took a salad and broccoli. Both were great. Loved the old style decor. Bathrooms were clean. Service was great.
