When I visited, they had a meal deal: a large pizza with a fizzy drink for a great price (I can’t remember the exact amount, but it was worth it!).
The waitress didn’t quite have that warm, charming Italian vibe you might expect
but hey, the pizza had enough personality for both of them!
The restaurant was busy but a table was available that was not reserved and we were invited to take it. There was no mention of any delays or waits for food so we took the table.
The waitress brought menus but very quickly returned for our order and as anyone who has been knows there are a lot of choices of pizza so I asked for just a couple minutes more to choose food but gave drinks orders. On the return we only ordered a pizza each but the waitress asked several times our choices and then had to return again to ask what we were having despite advising this before.
The atmosphere was severely lacking as the chef had Skrillex and loud dance music blasting from the open kitchen which isn’t part of the normal relaxed atmosphere I remember from previous visits.
Also the restaurant wasn’t very clean I noticed a lot of very tired paintwork and not the cleanest looking floor which was off putting so near the kitchen.
After 20 minutes we realised no one had been served any food and several people who were there before us started asking where their meals were. There was only one chef available who I believe was just prepping all the orders but not yet cooking them in the wood fire. The restaurant at this point had been open about 40 minutes.
Eventually some patrons were served but I could hear one table complaining they only received one pizza and if I heard correctly in the kitchen the chef had forgotten to exclude an ingredient but no one informed the table and so they complained they had received only one pizza which the guest had now finished before receiving the others.
A table also arrived for a web booking however the servers had no record of this and so had to find them a table in the already full restaurant.
After 45 minutes we asked if the pizza had been prepared as we were willing to cancel the order but they said it had been prepared but would be another 15 minutes or so for service. We then asked if we could take them away as we were going to start getting tight on car parking time, in total two pizzas took over an hour. On previous visits I’ve always remembered quick service for the food.
Between the service, the atmosphere and the cleanliness of the restaurant I unfortunately wouldn’t return to Donnellis again which is such a shame as I’ve had great experiences here before. This time it very much felt like what was once a relaxing romantic authentic restaurant has now been left in the hands of three young staff and while the parents are away the kids will play forgetting that the kitchen it open and guests can hear everything they say and see what they do.
Independent place too which I always welcome.
Just one comment to make… a cup (not mug) of tea costs £2.80… while a can of soft drink is £2.30. Please offer pots of tea for that price, after all, it’s one of the cheapest drinks to make.
