The Don Express located in Winston Salem. This place appears to be a hole in the wall, but don’t let looks fool you. The service was fast and friendly with the cook helping us place our order. All the food that I tried was delicious. The retaraunt is small, but the ramen bowls are big.

Great food and experience at Don Express. I like that you can order on tablets and get Japanese tea. The food came out quickly and was hot and fresh. I tried the katsudon and spicy tuna rice ball and everything was delicious. Will return.

Stumbled across this authentic Japanese restaurant, and it was amazing! We ordered the katsu chicken with rice, the ordering system is a unique set up and turned out to be very convenient. I highly recommend!

Ordered through UberEats. We’ve only ordered once previously but enjoyed it so much we were eager to try it again. I have to say this time was not a good experience. We ordered the Sauce Katsu Don and opted for the fried rice ($3.00 extra btw). There was about 2 tablespoons of rice in the bowl (see photo). The organic spring mix” is potato salad and there is no hot mustard to be found. For something called “Sauce Katsu Don” there was very little sauce on it and while extra sauce was provided for the extra cutlet we ordered, it wasn’t enough. Additionally the shumai were steamed the first time and they were wonderful. This time they were fried. While they were still good they weren’t as good as the first order. I asked for hot mustard with the shumai, but didn’t receive any. Disappointing is the way I would describe this meal.

This was the first Asian food we had since moving to Winston-Salem from small-town PA. It was fairly priced, and really good. The setting is casual, with easy entry for those in wheelchairs.
Not the best ramen I’ve ever had, but very good! My biggest critique is that I ordered level 4 heat (5 is max I believe) and I couldn’t feel any heat whatsoever. I tried my lady’s – she ordered heat level 2 – and they were virtually the same.

Food was tasty but for the quality and quantity it was very expensive to other ramen places. You get one less gyoza, half an egg and the fried rice is sticky. The flavor on the food is adequate but for the price I would not return. There are many other better authentic ramen places that are 30% cheaper with the same or better quality. $70-80 for two people is unacceptable for the quality.

It’s a tiny place with a covered outdoor section but it’s clean and Japanese pop was fun. The chicken curry I got was ok but expensive; the curry itself was tasty, but the breaded chicken katsu was old dry and hard, probably refried, certainly reheated. With the addition of cabbage and carrots the total came out to be $23

We walked out of this place, the pricing is insane. They charge you to make something spicy! $3 upcharge to add pork to the pork ramen. If you want to add beef it’s $8! Horrible for a quick service restaurant. I went once a few years ago and it was way better, this place is pricing itself out of many peoples budget. Would not recommend unless you are prepared to spend $25 per person.

This was a five star for me until today. I have ordered regularly, and I really enjoy the katsudon. I’m not sure if it’s because I ordered so close to closing, but the chicken I got today was so incredibly tough and inedible. I ended up throwing it away. I was able to eat the rice, which was still very yummy.

Don Express transports you to Japan with every bite! The staff is very friendly & service is consistently fast. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but the takoyaki & rice balls are mandatory each time we go! So many authentic Japanese specialties, all made with love. Portion sizes are large, you get what you pay for here. We drive over half an hour, but would gladly drive further if we had to. So much respect for this place. Support this local family business!
