Some things to note, highly encourage reservation ahead of time. We got there an hour before closing on a Sunday and even though there was a table open they almost didn’t seat us. It is small on the inside with limited tables so I would not say it’s great for groups.
They stop serving about 30 minutes before the posted closing time and don’t make exceptions.
We ended up ordering a Jenni role which had tofu/cream cheese/cucumber inside and avocado/panko/doke sauce outside and it was seriously amazing. Although there were only two veggie roll options on the menu I could easily eat two of this roll alone.
Things only got better with the curry. I assumed the curry was going to be Japanese style, but they are actually more thai style yellow and panang curry options. Unfortunately the Udon and Ramen dishes are not vegetarian as they are made with fish broth. But the yellow curry was perhaps the best yellow curry we’ve ever had (and we are a bit of curry snobs). The sauce was lighter than a traditional thai yellow curry and it had a delicious sweet finish. The veggies were tasty and fresh. When we come back to Murphys I will certainly be going for this curry again.
I do wish they had a few more vegetarian options, but very glad the ones they do are outstanding.
and more turns of a table. I hope my visit was just a fluke, (pun intended) and maybe someone just called in sick that day. Either way, a good manager would have picked up the slack. Our server was incredible, and handled the shortage with grace.
The whole experience was top notch. The laid back music on low in the background and the busy atmosphere gave it a real homie feel. Our server, Matt, was on his game and extremely friendly. He had a great feel for the crowd and was right there as soon as we even thought of a want or desire. I never believed in psychics before, but now I’m questioning things.
Price wise, it was definitely fair for the community it is in and what you expect from a typical sushi establishment. Then you eat the food and realize it is more than fair, it’s a deal. The quality of the items on the plate and the skill at which they are prepared are very high end, but the price tag is not. I look forward to dining here again.
Spend the extra to get dungeness crab over crab salad, 10/10.
As a self-appointed sushi snob, I can tell pretty quickly and within the first bite whether it’s quality sushi, or better served in a mall’s food court – and this place passes that test and then some!
Fresh ingredients, amazing flavors, great ambiance, killer music, and friendly staff. What more could you ask for? Sure they book up pretty quickly and can be a little stringent on timing, but if you’ve eaten anywhere else at the caliber of this place, it’s to be expected to a certain degree.
Doke is by far the best sushi within a 50 mile radius, and I’d put it on par with some of the best sushi I’ve ever had – and that includes amazing restaurants along the coast, Bay Area, Hawaii, etc.
Do yourself a favor and stop by Doke next time you’re in the area. I assure you, you won’t be disappointed!
Sushi chef is very nice though and he’s the only reason I may still ever come back. Dear owner please find new staff don’t give up on your restaurant!
