Reviews
A friend and I met for lunch at the long time established Dogwood Restaurant in Vinton. Parking is available on the street or in a top of the hill lot. There is a delightful looking dining patio on the side, but we’ll come back in warmer weather to dine outside. Sign at door said seat yourself, and there were several tables and booths available. Waitstaff appeared soon and took our order, but the menu on a Saturday afternoon is not as extensive as a weekday lunch. We were also too late for breakfast. We both chose the ham and turkey club sandwich, which comes with handmade chips, which I really wanted to try, , and we also ordered fries, but the dish came without the chips, even though we asked for both. My friends soda was served in a dirty glass and both of us received some dirty utensils. Waitstaff was pleasant when we brought this to her attention, and she promptly replaced. The restaurant was becoming busier, and service became slower. I noted only 2 active waitstaff, but there could have been more, as there was also a private party in a side room, possibly requiring a waitstaff. The noise from the kitchen was disruptive, as many reviewers have noted, making conversion difficult. When our food finally arrived, the portion was huge, equivalent to a sandwich and a half, and piled high, so thick it was difficult to get in your mouth! The fries were delicious, as was the sandwich. The food served somewhat made up for the earlier stumbles. The food was very plentiful, requiring a to go box. I would return for the food, but not for the atmosphere, service or other dining details.
On top of that, the restaurant itself didn’t feel very clean or organized. There was some kind of black buildup around the vents and on parts of the walls, and you can see straight into the kitchen where none of the cooks were wearing hair nets. It didn’t give the impression that cleanliness was a priority, so the hair in my food wasn’t surprising.
This was our first visit, and unfortunately, it’ll be our last.
I had to literally search both sides of this building to find her. Finally she left us the check and disappeared. Upon leaving I stopped to pay, bartender said he ‘could not’ accept our payment, so once again I had to track waitress down. The DOGWOOD has lost it place! It seems they are more interested in slinging beer & liquor along with a ‘one piece band’ than sticking with what they USED to know best, providing a good ‘home cooked meal’ at a fare price. I couldn’t believe the ‘inflation & shrinkflation’ could be so ramped. I guess somebody had to pay for the expansion. Apparently the owner couldn’t so they expect the customer to. Good Luck with that, for we Will Not be back!
This place gets packed and they don’t have a host to take your name, so expect to know who’s before you and stalk your seating. They are expanding, adding the space next door… so hopefully that will help.
