I went to the Mount Rainier location and ordered the drum plate with mac and cheese and collard greens; and I’m not exaggerating when I say this might be the best vegan soul food in the area.
The drums were crispy with a one of one batter; I have never tasted anything like that before. Crunch on the outside, seasoned through, not greasy, just right.
The mac and cheese redefined vegan; creamy, flavorful, and comforting without trying to imitate anything. It stood on its own.
The collard greens took me straight back home; tender, seasoned properly, and full of soul.
I also tried the ribs; and they were so good they honestly do not even need promotion.
This is not good for vegan.
This is just good.
If you are in the DC area and craving real comfort food done plant based; Dodah’s Kitchen needs to be on your list.
(The cheesecake was pretty bland though)
I’ve been plant based for close to 20 years ..soo, I know what I’m talking about…
I was sooo excited that this place was up the road from my school, and thought perhaps I had found a new lunch spot!
NOPE! …
First off ,the building isn’t clearly visible.. at least I didn’t think so.
Secondly, the lay out isn’t ideal..
thirdly, and most importantly… the food…
It was around 4:15pm ish… and some of the food looked like it was still from the lunch rush, and some stuff looked to have just been “topped “ off.. ..
I ordered the 1 entree + 2 sides. Chose the “general taso cauliflower (didn’t come over rice), and the collard greens and vegan Mac n cheese…
The cauliflower tasted like it was more along the lines of “traditional Orange chicken “ with hints of sweetness NOT GENERAL taso, which should be spicy. Very disappointing. Also, it wasn’t crispy.. because it was already tossed in the sauce and sitting on a hot line… ..
The collard greens were the most disappointing part… even more so than getting a sweet dish when i wanted some spicy notes. They tasted over cooked (mushy) and to make it worst, it tasted like the top layer of the green was cold.. because it was over the fill line and not being properly hot held. After 2 bites, I couldn’t take, I threw those greens out my car window for the birds to eat.
And lastly, the mac n cheese was very basic but it was the most enjoyable part of the meal.
And everything was cold (not freezing cold) but not piping hot like it should.
Needless to say, unless it’s to try something from their cold well or the pies/cakes.. I don’t foresee myself paying another $17 for a 1 entree 2/sides from them, NEVER AGAIN!
The last picture is what I ended up not finishing and choosing to throw away because there was no point to save it.. soo, if I could quantify it, I only ate about 30% of the meal. The rest… ️
Let me say it didn’t disappoint. That was a great dish. It was crisp and delicious . Like perfectly glazed with the sauce and it filled me up. The Mac and cheese is a must try. The quesadilla, dummies and side dishes are a must try.
Also I ordered online and there was a dish that they didn’t have so I was contacted by the establishment and helped me pick out another item. Great customer service.
If you want to try some vegan food. Go here. It’s some great choices.
I hope this helps
