Great local diner in downtown Ocala! Friendly staff and well attended by the locals. Had the whole hog omelette (ham,sausage,bacon) grits and wheat toast. They kept the coffee full. Meal was delicious! All was served promptly and hot. Gets busy later I was there at 8am on a Sunday.

If you’re looking for the atmosphere of a modern restaurant you’ll be disappointed. On the other hand, if a small, hometown diner is more to your liking this is your place. Diner on the Square keeps much of the feel of its predecessor, Richard’s Place. Why the change is immediate on walking in, the counter and cash register are replaced by homey, welcoming bench and decor, everything else that made Richards great carries forward. From the efficient, friendly wait staff, the speed from order to table, and most importantly, the food, Richard lives on in his descendant. The eggs over-easy were perfection, the bacon, crisp, the grits, creamy and the biscuit soft and warm. While Richards visits while his customers enjoy their meal is a memory and banter at the cash register a thing of the past, Diner on the Square keeps much of what made Richard’s Place great.

This is a place where everyone knows everyone else. But don’t worry, even if you’re not a regular, they will welcome you. My breakfast was delicious. Thick bacon, fried crisp on request, light biscuits served hot so the butter melted down into the nooks and crannies, eggs over medium done the way you always hope, and fried red skin potatoes – maybe you’ll also get a nearly charred crispy slice that’s oh-so-good. We will make it a point to come back to Ocala, specifically for this breakfast!
