Our church had a couples night out. There was 31 of us. They did a wonderful job. From start to finish. The food was delicious. The service was great for the amount of people we had! The deserts are to die for

My friend and I each had the fish sandwich. She got onion rings with hers and I had chips. I did try her onion rings. They were delicious. We both really liked the fish sandwiches. The server was attentive and didn’t rush us out. We typically take 1.5 to 2 hours when we go out for lunch. We were there for 2 hours. I believe his name was Leslie. He was great. The lady who checked us out was sweet. The decor was really cool and the menu was huge. Will definitely be back. Nice little mom and pop diner. I would have taken more pictures but I didn’t want to capture other customers.

Wow! I’ve lived here for almost 4 years and love to resturant around with the wife. This is that hidden gem and local old time place that all the locals go to for their homemade, delicious food. My Gosh! It’s the best for comfort food made fresh and made right. Taste on everything was sooooo good! The wife tried the baked steak with creamy, homemade mashed potatoes and pinto beans that are made correctly with the right flavorings. I wanted the double stuffed cabbages, but they were down to only one, so I had the baked chicken over dressing (stuffing). The owner came out and gave us the last stuffed cabbage to eat as an appetizer and apologized. Oh my gosh!! It was soooooo good. Did I mention the fresh made soft, sweet, doughy dinners rolls and butter? I can’t wait to go back and try the meal. Both our meals were just like grandma would make and couldn’t have been better. During the meal, we were gifted with a deep-fried dressing patty to try. Sounds kinda funky, but it was so succulent! Again, it tasted like grandma’s old-time recipe. We noticed the plate of spaghetti that the next table was eating. It was gigantic, and they ended up bringing some home. The wife wanted to try a homemade dessert but was too full. I ended up bringing home some of my dinner. It was just as good the next day. Prices were good for what you get here…..not too expensive, and not cheap.
BTW: we waited only minutes to be seated when we got here.
You can see that I’ve done well over 500 reviews and posted 4000 pictures and short videos. I have over 24,000,000 views, and I’m one of the very top restaurant reviewers for Google maps/Mapquest. This restaurant just became our favorite local American comfort food place to go. I’m sure this will be a regular go-to restaurant for us. I apologize for being verbose with this review, but this restaurant has been around for 65 years in the Diehl family, and you’ve got to try it!! I’m sure that you’ll agree on how good it is.
EZ ON / EZ OFF: If you’re traveling on Rt 64, exit off the Nitro exit 45 or Exit 50 for Institute. Punch it into your GPS…. So easy to find. And, it’s worth the mile or two to enjoy a meal here. I’ll bet dollars to donuts that you’ll make it a regular stop on your travels.

I ate here recently for the first time. The outside of the restaurant is far from appealing to me, but the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” applies here. I had a pork chop with fried potatoes, pinto, and cornbread. Absolutely delicious my partner had a roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and fries. Very, very good. For dessert we had some type of coconut pie, which I’m not a fan of pie, but this was very good. We also split one of their huge chocolate chip homemade cookies that is to die for.
There’s nothing like homemade fried potatoes, cornbread, and pinto beans. It’s hard to find that anywhere in Charleston aside from your own kitchen.
If this place underwent a makeover, it would likely attract people from diverse backgrounds & generations.
Did I mention my order was HOT & CORRECT?? And the portion sizes are HUGE. 2 people can share 1 dinner.
Will be eating here again soon

Great family owned restaurant with tons of memorabilia from local sports and hobbies from the family (I think).
Service was off th charts. The food can only be described as big comfort food. I was there with 28 family members because my uncle passed away and it was his favorite place. Alm the different plates looked fantastic, everyone was pleased with their food. My cousin ordered pie and said it was the best pie she has ever had.
They say they go through 350 potatoes every Sunday. I can see why

The food was excellent, however I stood waiting for 10 minutes before someone seated me. My husband had to take a call, I asked host to guide him my direction. We are an interracial couple, once my husband found me with no direction from host no one came back to our table. People seated after, drink orders taken and served still no one waited on us. Finally a young man came out of kitchen area walked by and said has no one waited on you. No was my answer. He apologized and promptly waited on us. He was very nice, but I was not comfortable with how we were treated so I doubt if we will ever visit them again.

Family owned where service was top notch. Atmosphere was unique with multiple vintage decorations from several genres. Value for money as the portions were larger than expected.
When checking out…asked about Veteran/military discount. Was informed only given to those in uniform. As a disabled Veteran I felt a little disappointed. None the less..paid the bill and admired the vintage decorations in the entryway as ibwas leaving.

Laid back atmosphere with different themed walls. From military to NASCAR to old cars, each wall had a different theme. The food was amazing like it is every time I have ever been there. Food was hot and fresh and generous portions were served . Our waitress was attentive, even though it was a packed house with people standing in line to get in.

Server was young no refills gave us the bill didn’t ask about dessert. My mom eats slow and it felt like server was growing impatient with us still at her table. My mom wanted a piece of pie and the girl let out a big sigh. Decor was nice. My mom is old she was so excited to eat there but being my first time I was upset with the server.
