I come here every while and again to purchase shrimp. I usually order 1/2 or 1 lb of shrimp. I have always had a good experience, shrimp are always flavorful and they’re a decent size. Today I ordered a 1/4 lb. My only complaint is they charge a 3.99% surcharge on credit and debit cards. I can kind of understand the surcharge for credit cards but debit? Not too sure about that. Not feeling that so I try to pay cash. Other than that no complaints on the shrimp from me.

Since they don’t have the means to let them know personally other than driving up there only to get further frustrated , I’ll leave this review for them to read. GO BACK TO THE ORIGINAL RECIPES that you’ve acquired through acquisition. Yesterday’s experience was horrible. The cook shouldn’t be alone while the partner is out running errands. Tossing food in the grease bare handed, taking orders at the cooking counter, one handed handling computer transactions , and God knows what when no one is watching. After all that…and I still gave it a shot and boy was I disappointed and my was stomach queasy for the rest of the night. I ordered the gooey shrimp and “talipia fried catfish”( one word) and the fish didn’t smell right either. French fries were all end cut finger nail fries and I never get the Cole slaw due to its metallic smell from the soda shared cooler. I’d caution you all to shape up over there prior to a state visit because someone is going to get ill. Take the ear buds out and knock the attitudes off and do better business.

If I could give no stars I would, first of all the man taking orders was on the phone the whole time and handling the food with one hand, I told him before he started my order that’s okay I don’t want the food give my money back, he said no you are going to get it just wait, I continued to say excuse me sir I don’t want the food he said shut up and wait. Then he came over and give my money back and said get the cuss word he used I don’t want to text Out! The other customer that was waiting said now sir don’t cuss at her there is no reason for that. Well all I am saying be careful where you go and know what food you are putting in your body. The rudeness was unbearable. You should close or find decent people to work at Detroit Fish & Shrimp.

Updated review 8/1/25–4 years later I give this place another try and it’s a NO! Y’all who saying this is good got bad taste buds and clearly don’t know what good food is! Cause the batter on those shrimp is horrible and orange still and soft and tastes weird, like what is that, and the fish is still flavorless. The fries are even bad, like you can’t even make good fries wth!and you can’t tell me that everything isn’t cooked in the same oils. Now y’all know this ain’t it. And to keep them open in Southfield is crazy work! What are people accustomed to eating if they think this is good food? Another waste of money but won’t be back again for sure, I tried __. 4 yrs ago review: This location has been sold. Not good. First I was surprised when I walked in and saw new people. Then the food doesn’t have any flavor. I got 2 little pieces of catfish, that had no flavor and the shrimp are a orange color, must be some big box store batter, IDK ♀️ but you’ve been warned. No cocktail sauce for the tasteless shrimp either and bad tartar sauce. It’s no where near the same. You can’t just buy a location and not give the same quality and think we’re going to continue to come. I hate it’s not black owned anymore, But, I won’t be back because of the quality, or lack of. We literally threw most of it away after spending all that money. Oh well.

Nope! used to order here years ago & was pleased. Unfortunately today was not the same experience. My food looked different than website pics. I don’t eat many fries, so a couple good ones would’ve sufficed. You look at em.. not sure if the potatoes or grease were old or they were cooked yesterday, but they weren’t edible. Orange Roughy was thin & shrimp were ok. So $25 later for 2 pieces of skinny fish, 4 shrimp, & some yucky fries…guess I’ll go cook. Service was good tho & the menus were new. Guess I know where the extra $ is going. Surely not to the food.

This isn’t the place you go if you’re trying to watch your weight . Of course that’s not why we patron…it’s a guilty pleasure…I’ve been several times. DF&S appears to inject a bit of southern soul flavor as their batter uses corn flour and distinct spices. Unlike many fried food eateries, it feels like they use much higher quality ingredients. For example, I was really surprised they had lobster tail & deep fried corn. Sehr lekker!!! Reasonable price points. Small, but clean take out only restaurant. By reducing overhead costs they channel resources into good eats. Within this category I give them a solid 4 stars. Don’t miss out on this innocuous strip plaza location because it’s worth a gander.

I responded, “you even saw me well before”. No action, just a blank stare. This was further exacerbated by the fact he overcharged & didn’t even include everything in the order. This place used to be on point but no longer black owned and service is very poor at best. I placed an order online BEFORE the cut off time and got there 10 minutes before closing. The door was locked but I saw they got my order AND my money. I banged on the door and this RUDE man came and looked and me, flipped me off and walked away! They took my order AND my money so I had to request a refund via Door Dash and wait 3-5 business day. While I was sitting here doing this review BEFORE 8pm. Some other folks came who also did Door Dash orders before the cut off time and tried to get in and found the door locked before closing as well (see pic-it was quite a few here before 8 and they found a locked door too) so they are going to have to request refunds via Door Dash too.. First of all DONT take my order and MONEY if you are not going to fulfill It and close early and you got a lot of nerve flipping me off thru the glass…would not dare do me like that if I was in there. I will continue to go to the original one that is still on point on the Lodge service drive in Detroit…never again at this location, especially with the bad reviews I see. Complete jerks!

I want to thank Detroit Fish & Shrimp restaurant, they are the cleanness restaurant in Southfield. PERIOD. They keep their grease fresh and clean. They inside restaurant is excellent clean. Every time you go in their their workers wiping down the counters and sweeping floor and mopping. I love to order food from this place, I drive about thirty miles to come to this place, it’s dam worth spending gas. The food is excellent, tasty it’s amazing. Thank you guys for bringing fresh and good tasty food to Southfield MI. I want to respond to the review Pia. She complaining about over price food. It’s worth it they food is fresh and clean. What do she expects it’s seafood. Or do she like the nasty owners who had the restaurant previous before this new restaurant owners. People don’t know the value of good food. People do not know a blessing with when they see one.
