I first discovered this place when I asked a Punjabi taxi driver where did he eat in Chelsea. I asked this because one day I saw a line of taxis picking up their dinners from this vegetarian deli. Actually I told him to drop me off there instead of my apt on 23rd. When I first walked in, I was hooked when I saw the man making chai. I LOVE CHAI but it has to be good chai not those ersatz flavored tea bags. They blend a magic concoction together and you can see the cardamom seeds floating on top. Today I went for four lunches and They shared they were moving across the street. All I can say is follow the smell of chai in the air and you will find it. It’s a family place where they treat all like brothers. If you are vegetarian you can’t beat the simple dishes with rice. If you aren’t vegetarian you will still get a belly full with the different vegetable combinations that they cook that day. Plus the PRICE IS RIGHT!

So glad I decided to walk here instead of grabbing something easy from Chelsea market. So flavorful and felt like a home cooked meal. Got the 3 veg platter and samosa channa with cha. Delicious

The food tastes like a comforting home-cooked meal. The prices are reasonable. I had the thali and samosa for $16.

Dil-e Punjab Deli is a small Indian deli that serves up pre-made vegetarian small bites, and platter as well as coffee and teas. it also has a small variety of snacks and packaged eats. this place basically is a waystation for cabbies, ride-hail drivers, and mostly other workers of South Asian descent. the space is small and kinda worn-in. there are some seats if you need a place to eat, but i just takeout bc it’s a bit too cramped for me, given the pandemic etc.
the eats? pretty good considering they are pre-batched, reheated, and then served throughout the day and night. so it’s really dependent on your expectations and for me the eats were fine. got the full combo which is rice + 3 vegetarian sides + 1 roti. there are typically like 5 veggie dishes to choose from; picked a lentil dish, mixed veggie one, and a potato-based one. all in all, ample amount of food. tastes good. spiced well flavor-wise but not much heat spice-wise. total for a full platter is $9.99 + tip, so it’s perfect for when you’re too lazy to cook and want a flavorful meatless option.
service is a bit gruff but that might be bc of the lack of English etc. however it’s fine as this is very much a grab-n-go sorta place.

My friend managed to persuade me to trudge past 16 treacherous blocks in the bone-chilling, icy grip of a January night, to get to this spot at an ungodly hour of the night.

FOOD IS DISGUSTING! This is a catastrophe for the neighborhood. This place has been here for more than 20 years. The food has always been 100% consistent. It’s always been good. About 3 months ago, everything changed. The food is awful! The offerings are mostly the same, but the preparation is totally different. Nothing has any flavor, and to conceal the blandness, now they just make everything spicy hot. If I eat anything from this place now, I’m up all night with diarrhea. Too bad, it was good while it lasted.
