American restaurant on the shore of Thunder Lake in northern MN. Thunderlina’s Lakeside bar is open from 2PM to sunset, Fridays and Saturdays Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. It will be open 2PM to 8PM Sundays of Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day weekends.

Our family has been spending summers at the lake since 2000, and Deer Haven has always been a special place for us. It’s the only restaurant on Thunder Lake with plenty of dock space, and we’ve made so many memories there over the years.
When Mike and Leigh reopened it in April 2024, we were excited—but we had no idea just how much they would elevate it. What they’ve done in just over a year is amazing. They started with a kitchen that had only a hand sink, and now it’s a place we can’t stop recommending.
Mike’s food is consistently incredible. Everything is made from scratch, and you can tell how much care he puts into each dish. Every meal I’ve been served has been hearty and full of flavor. My favorites are the fish & chips and his prime-rib with augratin potatoes. Mike’s off-season four-course dinners are also something we always look forward to.
Leigh runs the front of house and bar with so much warmth and energy. The drinks are creative and well-made, and the service is always friendly and on point, even during the busiest weekends. The whole place has a welcoming, community feel that makes you want to stay longer.
Downstairs, Thunderlina’s offers a more casual setup right near the water. It’s more of a takeout-style bar with picnic tables and outdoor seating, perfect if you’re coming off the boat or beach.
Mike and Leigh have truly created something special. Deer Haven isn’t just a restaurant. It’s a destination. We feel lucky to have it back and better than ever, and we cannot wait for our next visit.

I really wanted to enjoy my visit, but it ended up being a mixed experience. The prices were a bit on the spendy side, and the food itself was pretty average. I ordered the broasted chicken specifically because I didn’t want fish, but it had a noticeable fishy taste—as if it had been cooked in the same oil. The light breading didn’t seem to have any seasoning either; it seemed to be just a simple flour coating. The chicken was very moist and cooked well, but the flavor made it hard to enjoy.
On the positive side, the wait staff was good—mostly friendly, attentive, and welcoming. The interior has a cozy, up‑north feel with all the pine wood, which gives the place a warm, rustic atmosphere.
Overall, the service and setting were good, but the food quality and flavor didn’t quite match the price.

Food was very good, portions average, service was very good. It got pretty loud inside dining room as the bar area has hardly any separation. Beautiful view outside.

Beautiful bar & restaurant nestled on top hill overlooking river. Steaks were good but over cooked. Great salad dressings but didn’t care for the tree leaf salad. Would rather have iceberg lettuce salad. Outdoor area nice but cramped. They have pull tabs which we find fun.

I’m glad Deer Haven has reopened (2024) and we have another option for supper. The service has been great and they have a pretty large selection of beers. I’ve had the short rib sandwich – so good! The walleye fingers were a special and they were very good with jalapeño tarter sauce. The wild rice hot dish is not the typical side – with pork and mushrooms, it’s a hearty dish.

Great to have Deer Haven on Thunder back & better than ever. Mike, Leigh and staff are top notch. Started with Loaded tots appetizer- a must. Enjoyed classic burgers and fries made to order. Finished with great deserts. Can’t wait to come back for more on the menu. Thank you

Went for happy hour and then dinner…happy hour is drinks with $1.00 off regular (high) price. Dinner was only so-so and also expensive, so we split an entree. Restaurant prices are up all over, but still…over $100 for two drinks and a meal we divided? We also were not allowed to choose our seating, though the table we requested for a lake view was open, as were several others. We are locals, but won’t be going back—seems slanted toward summer boat tourism.
