In January of 2007, Aaron Sanders and Max Toste opened Deep Ellum. Their goal was “to be the awesomest bar they could be!”, a real neighborhood joint with a focus on old-fashioned hospitality, serving the best beer available, crafting high-quality cocktails, and making the most delicious comfort food ever to come out of such a tiny kitchen.
Small, convivial gastropub with eclectic fare, a long craft beer list, classic cocktails & a patio.

Service is great!
Their n/a drinks are complex and balanced and delicious.
Chicken sandwich? What I was craving and it hit the spot.
German potato salad? As someone who generally enjoys a German potato salad? This one was not for me. Didn’t taste right at all, and my server was kind enough to let me swap the side to be satisfied.
Food came quick. Space was clean and small but not crowded.
Parking lot out back had multiple spaces available and was $1.35/hr. There’s some 2 hr free spots a few blocks down but you have to parallel park. Some 1 hr free spots closer to the restaurant but those were almost all taken Saturday lunch hour.
Lots of options here, considering we have meat eaters, pescatarians and kosher eaters in the group tonight. We started off with a plate of their pickles and they were fabulous. With it, beers! Including a draft German beer for me and a tin of a non-alcoholic for Mrs. K.
For main, I chose the Italian sandwich and it was fabulous. Well loaded and very tasty if perhaps a little messy. But that’s what napkins are for. Mrs. K. chose the grilled cheese and said it was excellent.
Great service here and we had a fabulous evening. Five stars!
I have been a customer since the Gaff and fully enjoyed Deep Ellum until today
There was a bar tender and presumed owner/manager present
We quickly were tended to for drink and food order and the owner brought us our Cuban sandwich that was extremely over salted and inedible
After being ignored once we stacked our full plates and empty glasses, we interrupted the conversation between the two employees on (11/19 and 1:30pm) for the check waiting for over 15 minutes to be tended to. But heard all about the employee needing health insurance. Instead of coming to us mid meal asking how it was- he focused on cleaning out a ketchup bottle.
When taking our check after request we commented that the sandwich was inedible with over salt and he said oh sorry and threw the check down with the manager in the building
Let alone the bad food, the service was equally as terrible as we were 2 patrons out of 3 and completely ignored and paid our entire bill with no remorse from the workers
After this experience- I wont be returning but glad the employee was able to obtain health insurance and clean a bucket of ketchup while we sat waiting for help.
Sad to see a place I loved fall down so hard.
Glad to see they kept the original bar, which I was told they would but you never know lol. The décor is quite boring, nothing on the walls and 1 TV that was not on. The bar has stools, not chairs, which is definitely a thumbs down for me. The staff was super friendly and attentive, cocktails are fabulous, beer list, not so much. A short list, and at the time nothing that jumps out and grabs you (IMO). The food was decent, got their famous gorgonzola fries, which were good, but could have been more crisp. Smash burger was good, crisp on the edges, the Italian was nothing to write home about, it was OK, would not get again. I did really enjoy the pickled veggies, especially the brussel sprouts, they were delicious. Will I return, yes, as I hope the place and the clientele grow on me.
