We also shared the octopus tempura, which was perfectly tender on the inside and crisp on the outside—one of the best I’ve had. Our food came out quickly, yet nothing felt rushed.
The ambiance is warm and inviting; you quickly forget you’re right under the L train. The staff was so pleasant and attentive, clearly taking pride in creating a great dining experience.
Highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for quality ramen, sushi, and genuine hospitality. I’ll definitely be back!
Their omakase is phenomenal and thoughtfully prepared, and the ramen is just as memorable, with a deeply flavorful, comforting broth that you can tell was made with care. On top of the food, the owners are genuinely kind and incredibly hardworking, which makes the experience even more special. If you’re looking for exceptional sushi without the hype or pretension, Dawa is a must-visit.
Premium grade seafood, prepared with true attention to detail. The soul of sushi lies in the quality and freshness of the fish, and this place absolutely delivers. The ingredients here can rival, and even surpass some of the top omakase spots in Philadelphia. Don’t let the location or surroundings fool you; just look at the pictures and the natural marbling of the fish, and you’ll understand what I mean. Every bite reflects the chef’s commitment to excellence.
Must try items: Chutoro, Otoro, Uni, Foie Gras, Crispy Rice with blue fin tuna
Ordered eel avocado, California rolls. Shrimp tempura, salmon roll, vegetable ramen, and chicken katzu.
Would come again easily. Reasonably priced. Service attentive. Initial order screw up corrected rapidly with apologies.
Not a fan of non-asian indie pop American music at a sushi restaurant – would prefer authentic Asian music, but my 16 year olds liked the music playing in the background (as an indicator of the ambience, and of my old fogeyness)
The salmon roll is $10 at time of writing, slightly more expensive than nearby alternatives but seems to be expertly prepared.
The braised pork belly buns are delicious and come with thick slabs of pork meat.
The fried rice rolls appetizers are also quick good and does their job to stimulate the appetite.
The cha shu ramen itself is slightly spicy and includes a sliced slab of corn which is an interesting choice, at first glance, it seems a bit like instant ramen but upon tasing the noodles are certainly higher quality than that of instant ramen. The eggs are hard boiled and reminiscent of soy sauced braised salty tea eggs, the broth is flavorful but nothing too special and the same can be said for the cha shu pork pieces. Overall 4/5. The ramen passable but the sushi is the main highlight of this place.
I’ve had sushi in Japan, South Korea, and all across the tristate area, and recently in Hawaii and Dawa still stays at the top. There are other places in NYC/DC/LA that serve flashy omakase, but they usually charge the equivalent of a down payment on a Rav4 for a single meal. Dawa offers world-class sushi and sashimi for a reasonable price.
Everything from the freshness of the fish, the clean aroma, the temperature of the nigiri, the texture and mouthfeel of the rice grains that are expertly molded, is great. Even the house blend soy sauce has a subtle but noticeable unctuous punch. It’s incredible to experience how much the chef cares about creating an incredible culinary experience. I get the chef’s special every time I eat at Dawa, and look forward to trying out their Omakase soon.
Though I usually focus on sushi when I eat at Dawa, I’ve tried their ramen, buns, and tempura and it was tasty! For anyone who wants to try some of the best sushi ever made by an incredible chef, I highly recommend Dawa!
Thank you Chef Joseph!
