Currently in soft opening, the menu has really good food! I was surprised by the skewers – they were incredibly flavorful and perfectly cooked. El toro was my preferred roll as it had a nice little kick, but the mango tango was also really good. Only downside was that we sat by the door, so there were quite a few bugs that would fall into the table.

Prices for the specialty rolls were 27-32 each, so it was a bit pricey compared to the only other Peruvian sushi place I’ve been to (which is in Long Beach, so this is way more convenient). We also had the nigiri, which had good quality fish. There was one piece that was slightly fishy, however, this was one of the better quality nigiri that I’ve had in San Diego for the price point. Excited to see how Dark Horse looks once they have their full opening.

Came to try out this new restaurant but it’s a little deceiving because it still has the old sign up. The food was amazing 10/10. Menu was limited but they said they are working on it. My favorite was the Mango Tango roll. Can’t wait to come back.

This location has had a couple of unsuccessful and disappointing restaurants. Dark Horse will hopefully change that. The menu was more high-end than I expected and delicious. I’ll be back.

A unique concept for San Diego – Japanese/Latin fusion. Just opened up so they don’t have their full menu yet, but from what I’ve seen and tasted they are breath of fresh air for the area.

There are large communities of Japanese people in various South American countries (especially Brazil) and they have developed a very tasty unique approach – lots of chile and spices and traditional South American ingredients to pair with Japanese cuisine. Dark Horse brings this to the Torrey Hills area. While there are other sushi restaurants in the area, I would say that Dark Hourse’s menu is unique enough that it should be treated almost as a different type of cuisine. In speaking with the chef the menu will be expanding (as will their sake/beer offerings) soon and I’m excited to try the new things. If you want more traditional nigiri/sashimi/rolls you can definitely get it, but come in with an open mind and try a fusion dish!

Edit: Went back a second time, and the El Toro roll was very delicious. Highly recommend this if you want to ease into this unique cuisine. The Mango Tango roll should also be quite accessible and tasty to the vast majority of folks. The mini wonton tacos were light and perfect. The rock shrimp were like a variation of honey walnut shrimp with a kick.

It was VERY disappointed. OVERPRICED for the value. The place was formally Unisushi and recently changed the owner. We liked Unisushi because fish part of sushi were thick cut and generous amount of fish although it was more pricey than another sushi place in the next shopping center. We went there because we wanted to have Chirashi bowl at Unisushi. (it was $27 at Unisushi). We asked a waiter if they have Chirashi and he said that he could make it for $32. $5 more than the previous Unisushi. I was curious what they offered. We had sushi plate and sashimi instead. However both fish are VERY thin cut and I can even see the other side. The rice on sushi was mushy. Sashimi’s fish was even thinner. I have never seen that thin cut expect sushi in Vons. We are the only customers at that time but the service was slow and we had to ask chopsticks even after they brought food. You could find better sushi or Japanese food restaurants in that area. I was still hungry so that we went to Vons next door and got Thai Chicken salad, which was more satisfactory than that sushi plate.

Food was amazing. The Mango Tango and Tunalicious were chef’s kiss. They’re going through new ownership so they’re just getting started. Will be coming back soon!!

Really cool concept. Not your run of the mill copycat sushi place. Love the Peruvian influenced sushi menu. The owner and service is great too. I will become a regular. Everyone should try this place.
