Used to eat at darbar quite often, I loved their take on the butter chicken, very sweet and flavorful. Last night we decided to get darbar for dinner. Upon bringing our pickup order home, it was very clear the rice was severely overcooked, with brown patches all through it. No idea how this would be seen as acceptable to serve? The butter chicken also was a lot more “watery” than normal. Usually it has a little bit of consistency. The chicken was also brown and overcooked. The prices have gone up astronomically and for the price we paid, the food was almost inedible. Very disappointed in our experience, I used to recommend going there and unfortunately will not be doing that anymore.

Best Indian food in Kingston. The owners are wonderful and hospitable. My mom has been buying food from here since they opened, so it brings me comfort every time I get food from here as an adult. I’m so sad to hear about the rent increase and closure, it’s unfair. Thank you for being a staple in Kingston my whole life ❤️ all the best.

We went to Prince Edward County for the weekend. Many amazing restaurants yet Darbar food was still better. Cannot replicate these recipes at home. We had chicken Korma, Lamb Bhoona, saag aloo, palak paneer, garlic naan, onion baji, aloo begun (sp? Sorry)
I cannot eat hot, burn your mouth, spice. These dishes are so flavourful without the burn.
My husband said “best meal I have ever had!!”
We often drive over an hour for this place. The staff are kind. I hope they stay open forever.
It’s that secret little spot you have to try.
Restrooms are up some stairs. FYI

This is my favorite Indian restaurant in kingston, maybe even my fav restaurant in kingston. My friend and I go often to get the chicken karma and mixed vegetables curry. The naan is amazing and the darbar rice delicious. I really hope they will find a new location for their business as I, and many others will be very sad to see them go!

We heard the news that Darbar is closing its doors at the end of January 2026. We use to live in Kingston & we love this place (Chicken Korma, Kashmiri Chicken, Garlic naan bread, Peas paleo rice). We moved to Vancouver in 2007 and eat at Michelin Star restaurants (e.g., Vij’s), but we still crave the unique flavours of our beloved Darbar. When we visit Kingston, we always make it a point to get food from here. Thank you to the owners, staff and cooks for the decades of memories, laughs and good times spent enjoying your food made with love. I hope this review is read by them so they can know the appreciation of their loyal customers and what this place mean to so many of us. My fingers will remain crossed, that sometime down the road a new Darbar restaurant will open up again.

New to town. Walked downtown Friday night & came apon this eatery. Acknowledged at the door & seated in short order. The place was busy & we watched several people popping in for their Take Away. We throughly enjoyed our 2 dishes + garlic naan. The delicious dishes are Very reasonably priced! We paid far less per dish here than what we paid for 2 “ok” wraps, down the road, a couple nights earlier.
Definitely a place we’ll return to.
Excellent Service, tasty food & great value prices!

I had to give 1 star hence I am giving otherwise this restaurant do not even deserve minus rating. I ordered Paneer tikka Masala, they do not now what is paneer tikka masala. PTM made in thick red gravy with diced onion and green bell pepper, instead the gravy was runny and yellow with onion and bell peppers. And in PTM paneer is marinated which was not the case in my order. Pathetic taste, super low quality and quantity.

Worst food i have ate in canada in the name of Indian cuisine. The funny thing is that Owner told me he is operating this restaurant for 32 years, It is such a shame that still serve such a pathetic food, feels sorry for residents and students of kingston. Google does not allow 0 ratings otherwise I would have given that, and I want my money back, that is pure cheating against indian food.
Please avoid this restaurant.
Biryani was not even rice pulav see the picture your self.
Matar paneer just had boiled peas and some panner no gravy at all, see picture as proof.
Look at the Naan, they are the one you get ready-made from Walmart and chargedme 4 cad for that, we ordered both regular and garlic but they both are same.

It’s unbelievable that this place is operating since years. They server food which is noway close to authentic indian food.. We ordered matar panner , dal tadka , biryani and naan..
The panner was very chewy and you can hardly find panner pieces, the dal tadka was average and biryani was actually veg pulav .. frozen veggies added to rice..
The worse was Naan. I haven’t seen any indian resturante serving pita bread in the name of naan .. Funny thing the garlic naan was basically garlic seasoning over pita bread ..
Save your time and money and please avoid this place.

The ambiance, interiors and setup is pretty amazing. The round window seats overlooking the streets provide a wonderful vibe. The staff is friendly however they were pretty below in serving and we had to wait for a long time to get our orders despite us being the only people who were dining in. We saw multiple delivery orders picked up during our dine in. As we weren’t local to Kingston so we had no other option than to wait.
Coming to the food, we had ordered Lassi in drinks that was mango flavored, we didn’t expect that was coming. The Mulligatawny soup we ordered was pretty thin in consistency. The tea was okay. For the main course we had ordered chicken tikka masala which we didn’t like in terms of taste and cooking. The chicken pieces didn’t at all taste like tikka, it was like the same cubes used in butter chicken. The prawn phatia was too sweet in taste. The mixed veg was Average. Overall an average experience with a huge room for improvement in terms of food taste.
