Dante & Luigi’s

Social Profile:

Established in 1899, Dante & Luigi’s is one of the oldest existing Italian restaurants in the United States. Situated in the heart of the Italian Market district, it was once the destination of Italian immigrants arriving in Philadelphia. Unable to speak English, they arrived on the docks with the name of the restaurant written on a scrap of paper and pinned to their lapels. They were given lodging in the upstairs rooms and work in the restaurant. Dante & Luigi’s retains much of the same atmosphere as it had in the past. Housed in two converted town houses, the charm of yesterday still exists. The cuisine is a well-balanced mix of homemade, “Old World” specialties, along with delicious fresh seafood and exceptional daily specials.

Old-world Italian cuisine like red-sauce pasta & osso buco served in 2 converted townhouses.

We came here for dinner and had a wonderful meal! We ordered the stuffed whole calamari to start, and we got the rigatoni carbonara and the ziti with broccoli rabe and sweet Italian sausage as mains. We finished our meal with the tiramisu and the Italian cream cake with rum. We thought the Italian cream cake lacked rum flavor, but everything was delicious overall! Our favorites were the calamari and the carbonara. The service was quick and friendly, and we would definitely come back to try other items on their menu!

This was an old time restaurant. The history of the restaurant was fascinating. Large portions of food. Pricing was average. Atmosphere nice to talk and also to be romantic if so wished. They did not have chicken marsala on their menu but they made it for me. I must say the marsala was the best that I have had. Parking was the only negative. We ended up having to valet park for $19.

Dante & Luigi’s is truly a piece of Philadelphia history, and you can feel that the moment you walk in. The service was a perfect 10/10. We called to change our reservation last minute, and they still managed to squeeze us in with zero attitude just kindness. Throughout the night, two staff members were always nearby, explaining the menu and making us feel taken care of. It really elevated the experience.
The dishes overall were great, but a couple really stood out. The Carbonara was one of the best I’ve had in my entire life rich, flavorful, perfectly done. The lasagna was also exceptional. We tried the seafood pasta, which was good, though I think it could’ve been executed just a bit better. We also ordered mussels, and those were fantastic fresh and packed with flavor. The vibe was lively but comfortable. It felt like an older crowd overall, but there were definitely younger diners as well. The atmosphere reflects the restaurant’s long history I believe it’s one of the city’s oldest Italian spots and that classic charm is part of what makes the place special.

A second birthday celebration. The service was great from.the moment we stepped in. Our waiter Aarond was amazing, we started we cocktails vs wine. I described how I like my bourbon and it exceeded my expectations. The caesar salad was perfect ratio of greens and dressing. Crispy calamari rings with marinara. The other salad was houe salad. We were appetizers and salad in timely manner. Our entrees ziti w broccoli rabe and Italian sausage and 2nd entree was a seafood medley lobster tails, mussels, clams on top of linguine with a spicy sauce. We opted to do one dessert, chocolate cream cheese cannoli. Everyting was delicious. Authentic Italian food with a wide selection of traditional dishes. The restaurant offered perfect ambiance for dinner for two.

The mushroom with stuffed shrimp appetizer was really good! Steamed clams weren’t fresh and were too salty. Bone marrow was not too heavy and good with bread. The meat itself was not as special. Pasta is what you think it tastes like. Forgot to order dessert before paying but was discouraged to add on because the waiter complained about opening another check. Cozy traditional family vibes inside.

We celebrated our son’s birthday at this restaurant, just a family dinner.
We were there on Saturday night, restaurant was full of people, we placed a reservation day before celebration and they offered us a spot at 8:30 pm which was perfect for us.
We were very pleased with food and service, our waiter was very nice, polite and informative, he recommended a day’s specials and we ordered some dishes based on his recommendations and didn’t regret it.
We all ordered a different entrees and all of them were done excellent! Appetizers were also fantastic!
The house wine that our waiter recommended was pretty good as well!
Definitely worth the money and will definitely come back!

Great vibe and service. It was the best carbonara in the US that I’ve ever tried.
One more great thing— prices are really good here!

One of the oldest original Italian restaurants in Philadelphia. Known for its wide variety of Italian specialties, some of the best ‘gravy’ in Pennsylvania!

Located in the heart of South Philly, this corner restaurant has been around for over 100 years.

I would highly recommend reservations, and you must take advantage of their parking valet. Come hungry, and you will not be disappointed!

Excellent restaurant with a quaint atmosphere. Respectable casual with elegance. Separate dining areas that keeps the noise level down and makes it feel more quaint and cozy. Tables are properly set with white linen tablecloths, silverware, and stemware. Restaurant seems to take pride in everything they do, from food to service and cleanliness. We found street parking within a block but there is valet service available. Great neighborhood. Service and food were top notch. We had veal bolagnase pasta which was out of this world delicious, veal medalions with capers, and linguine with seafood. They have wines, beers, and cocktails. We thought everything was very reasonably priced for portion sizes. We are definitely going back, we had an all around great experience there.

I went with a party of 5 for a Temple Graduation dinner. Parking in the area is horrific. They do offer valet, street parking for $19.00, ouch! As noted in the pictures, a variety of food was ordered. The service was on par with an upscale restaurant. EVERYONE enjoyed their meals. The portions were just enough so that you were not hungry afterwards however, you did not have any extra to take home. I have to say that the wallpaper in the main dining room was either old and nicotine covered or the worst, most dreary choice I have ever seen. Food good, ambiance, yuck. The price was reasonable for the size of the party. The parking situation and the self harm inducing wallpaper make it unlikely that I will return. Your mileage may vary.
