I went there without reservation on a Tuesday evening. There was a place for one person. The place is old-looking and cosy, and there’s a good background noise. I had Vitello Tonnato as starter and Ossobucco as main dish, and I must say that I’m not disappointed. The Vitello was a decent quantity, on a bed of rucola salad, and the Ossobucco – while not an “American” quantity – was very, very well prepared, literally fell of the bone. Delicious!
A nice glass of my favorite win, Nero d’Avola accompanied this quite well.
We came as a group to try the famous Italian dishes. We didn’t order alcohol — and it seemed that from that moment something changed. The wine glasses were removed with visible irritation, as if we had broken an unspoken rule: “pasta must come with wine.”
The website states that there are vegan options available. When I asked which dishes would be suitable, the waiter nervously pointed at a few lines on the menu without any explanation or recommendation.
Later, the manager approached and loudly said, with irony, “That pasta is for the vegan,” as if it were something to joke about. In that moment, I felt uncomfortable not for myself, but for the level of service.
The true Italian philosophy of food is piacere (pleasure) and convivialità (togetherness). At the center is the person at the table not control over their choices.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is truly beautiful. But sometimes, a single tone of voice or gesture is enough to change the taste of the entire evening.
In the photo, a Venetian mask hangs on the mirror suggesting an outer atmosphere of beauty and theatricality, and an inner mismatch of energy in restaurant.
Started with some excellent bread with some salt, cheese and garlic. All were applied lightly and none were overwhelming. A salad was had by the Mrs and we then move onto the mains for us. I had the lasagna, which came in an individual copper pan. It was EXCELLENT!! It also stayed very hot for a long time. The Mrs had the Orecchiette Pomodoro E Buratta, which was also fantastic! We finished of with a dish of tiramisu, which was ‘okay’. It was sort of just a pile of the ingredients, which tasted good, but was compromised by its unhomoginized construction. Had it been constructed traditionally I think it would have been better. (Forgot the “before” photo )
The inside was very nicely appointed and had an interesting dumbwaiter to bring items to and from the upper dining area.
They should consider a vestibule or something to block the cold wind from getting in onto the front half of the diners. As soon as the door opens, half the place freezes. The host/owner(?) Was also to blame as he discussed seating options with the outside guests, while keeping the door ajar.
Overall I would DEFINITELY REPEAT!!
The service team seemed quite busy, but when they had a moment, they were friendly and attentive. There is no printed wine list; instead, about seven wines are available, though unfortunately without any mention of the producer — which makes it somewhat challenging for wine lovers to choose confidently.
The appetizer platter was quite good, offering a nice selection of cheeses, cured meats, and small delicacies. However, the main course was disappointing. My carbonara was dry, and the pasta had clumped together into a dense mass (see photo). The truffle ravioli, both at our table and the neighboring one, were not well received either — while the sauce was fine, the ravioli themselves lacked finesse and were too heavy in texture.
In summary, this is a beautiful restaurant with great potential, but the food unfortunately falls short of expectations.
Thanks for the amazing food and great evening!
I recommend the gnocchi with pistachio pesto!
From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere feels warm and welcoming, with a cozy, intimate setting that’s perfect for both romantic dinners and relaxed evenings with friends. The staff are genuinely friendly and attentive, making you feel at home right away.
The food is outstanding. Everything tastes fresh and carefully prepared, from the focaccia and homemade pasta to the classic dishes like carbonara, lasagna, and gnocchi. Each plate is full of flavour and clearly made with love for traditional Italian cooking. Portions are generous without being heavy, and the presentation is simple and elegant.
Dessert is also worth saving room for — the tiramisu is light, balanced, and the perfect way to end the meal.
Overall, Dal Pagliaccio offers authentic Italian cuisine, great service, and a lovely atmosphere right in the city centre. Highly recommended — I’ll definitely be coming back!
