We chose this restaurant for a Valentine’s Day dinner, and while nothing was terrible, nothing really justified the price or made the evening feel special. I get the sense this place might shine more at lunch than for a prix-fixe holiday dinner.
Starters:
We ordered the Endive salad and the roasted carrot salad. The Endive was exactly what you’d expect — fresh, straightforward, and the better of the two. The roasted carrot salad was more adventurous. If you’re in the mood to try something different, it’s worth a shot, but it wasn’t a standout for me.
Second Course:
We tried the pappardelle with short rib ragu, the olive oil–poached halibut, and the cauliflower with lemon breadcrumbs. The short rib ragu was the clear winner — rich, comforting, and something I’d recommend. The halibut, unfortunately, was pretty fishy. I was hoping the grapefruit would brighten it up, but it didn’t help much. If you’re sensitive to strong seafood aromas, I’d skip it. The cauliflower was fine, but I couldn’t help thinking a more flavorful vegetable like lion’s mane mushrooms would’ve made the dish more interesting.
Dessert:
We ended with the chocolate pavlova and the pineapple nut tart. Both were extremely sweet — sweeter than I prefer — so if you don’t love sugary desserts, you might want to pass.
Overall, the meal was okay, but not memorable enough for the price. I wouldn’t come back for a special occasion.
Food reviews:
Onion dip–I’ll never look at grocery store chips and dip the same way. Salty and garlicky combo was addictive to start the meal. Must order!
Sweet onion toast–described like a “smash burger” by our waiter, the toast was packed with deep caramelized flavor from the onions. Sauce paired well with an acidic bite
Burrata–just okay compared to the other apps. Homemade cracker had a good texture. Burrata itself could use more flavor or mostarda to bring out sweetness
Strozzapreti–described as a “hamburger helper”, this dish took the grocery store staple and blew it out of the water. Duck was tender and rich throughout.
Pappardelle–beautiful red sauce and cooked to perfection. Very fresh and complimented the duck well
Butter cake–I’ll be dreaming about this. Light and airy cake was beautiful with the cream on top and crunch from garnish
Dark chocolate tart–rich chocolate flavor without being too overwhelming. Crème fraiche broke up the bite nicely, almost like an Oreo!
Side note: I’ve seen people are unhappy with the 25% automatic service charge, but they truly earned it during our visit from the kind hostess, to the attentive water service, to the fresh place settings and table wipe down between courses
Both the Onion Dip and Fritto Misto were fantastic but a lot of fried food to start our meal, so we ended up ordering the Simple Green Salad to accompany our pastas. The Stracci with lamb is definitely one of the best dishes I’ve had in Chicago! We also ordered the gluten free Pappardelle – perfectly creamy ragu and their GF pasta didn’t taste like a sacrifice at all. The herb soda was an amazing surprise. So delicious!
The fun and festive front dining room was accompanied by impeccable service. The 25% service charge was well worth it on a busy Saturday night.
I absolutely loved our visit to Daisies and cannot wait to return!
We were seated early while waiting for the rest of our party, so we ordered a matcha latte and a black and tan from the cafe, which serves La Colombe coffee. Both were good, though nothing particularly memorable.
Once everyone arrived, we all opted into the Restaurant Week experience. We started with the cinnamon brown sugar coffee cake, which was dense and pleasantly not overly sweet. For the main courses and sides, we ordered one of each dish since there were four of us and shared everything. Our spread included the eggs Benedict, quiche, biscuits and gravy, pappardelle, breakfast potatoes, sage maple sausage, bacon, and the simple greens salad.
The eggs Benedict had a unique flavor profile, we couldn’t quite pinpoint what was on it, possibly collard greens and mushrooms, but it did have a slightly odd aftertaste. It wasn’t bad, just unexpected. The quiche had good flavor, but the portion was disappointing, it was quite small and came with a side salad that felt more like filler than a true accompaniment. The biscuits and gravy were tasty, though the biscuit itself was a bit dry and could have benefited from more gravy. The pappardelle was the standout dish of the meal, the flavors worked beautifully together, especially with the mushroom ragu.
As for the sides, the breakfast potatoes were perfectly seasoned and crispy and easily the best side. We were pleasantly surprised by the sausage, the texture was great and it tasted very fresh. The simple greens salad, unfortunately, fell flat and wasn’t anything special, we all wished we had ordered another side of the breakfast potatoes instead. The bacon, however, was rich and flavorful.
Overall, we had a great experience. While there were a few misses with the food, most of the dishes were enjoyable, and the atmosphere made for a lovely Sunday brunch. We’ll definitely be back.
We all enjoyed our chosen cocktails. I had the Concord Enzoni as I was intrigued by the roasted grapes. It was fantastic. Served with a king cube.
We ordered two appetizers and were gifted with a third. I’m not sure if it was due to our wait, our daughter’s birthday or simply the generosity of the kitchen. We tried the French Onion Dip and it did not disappoint. It seems to be a favorite of many. We debated between the Leeks and Brussels. After listening to the description from our waiter, we opted for the Leeks. Half of our table liked it. We all agreed that Beef Tongue was the star of the show rather than the Leeks, which may be why half of the table didn’t care for it. The sweet onion toast was the complimentary starter. We all enjoyed the flavor but it was challenging to share.
We all ordered a pasta for dinner. I had the gnocchi. I am always in search of pillows of pasta and these certainly qualified. Light as air and not too rich. So many will serve gnocchi over cooked and extraordinarily chewy. I couldn’t have asked for a better entree. My husband has the Pierogi and he too was thrilled with how light they were. The Strozzapreti and the Cavatelli were the other two dishes at the table.
Then came the challenge of dessert. We all agreed my husband won with his choice of the Ice Cream Crunch Bar. Holy smokes, it was every kid’s dream served at an elevated adult level. I opted for the Salted Maple Pie. Very much in the family of a custard or pumpkin pie with a light maple flavor. The birthday girl ordered the Gooey Butter Cake and it was accompanied by a tiny slice of chocolate cake with a candle courtesy of Daisies.
The meal was full of flavor, cooked to perfection, and paced in a manner where we never felt rushed. I highly recommend for a special night out.
The pasta was amazing, especially the beetroot agnolotti (I might be saying it wrong, but it was so good!). And the French toast was incredible too. We’ll definitely be back!
My personal favorite was the Agnolotti pasta. It was unique, flavorful, and unforgettable. From start to finish, this restaurant exceeded my expectations and I can’t wait to come back.
