We were actually heading to another restaurant and stopped a couple on the street to ask for directions. They insisted we go to Da Carmelo instead and I’m glad we listened.
The place is very well staffed, and the owner was personally greeting guests and cooking, which immediately set the tone. The food was flavorful and generous. We shared an appetizer of sliced tomatoes with mozzarella balls, figs, and strawberries with fresh basil, simple, fresh, and beautifully balanced.
I had the vongole, which came with a very good number of clams, nicely cooked and full of flavor. My dining companion ordered the shrimp fettuccine, not even sure what the sauce was exactly, but it was absolutely delicious.
The only small note: the wine pour felt a bit short. That said, service more than made up for it. We declined dessert, and the owner still brought us a small complimentary piece of deep-fried ice cream with berry sauce, which was a lovely and unexpected touch.

This was our first visit at Da Carmela but it definitely won’t be our last. We have passed by it dozens of times but there are so many excellent restaurants in SMA we just hadn’t gotten around to it.
We were warmly greeted by the host and quickly seated. We decided to eat inside because I am not a fan of the traffic noise on the Ancha. He brought us drink menus and quickly brought us our drinks. He also brought us some nice warm bread with olive oil and a delicious balsamic while we perused the menu.
We decided to share the fried artichoke appetizer. These were quartered artichoke hearts fried in a very light bread crumb topping. The texture was perfect. The artichokes were accompanied by a lemony sauce that enhanced the overall flavor.
Stacy ordered the pasta puttanesca. She was warned that it was a little spicy and when she mentioned that she didn’t do well with spicy they were very accommodating and offered to make it less spicy. The sauce was hearty and coated the pasta verry well. The pasta tasted homemade. The capers really added to the flavor and the giant olives were divine (her only wish was that they were pitted).
I ordered the artichoke and four cheese risotto. It was phenomenal. While I want to try other things on the menu, I just may have to order this every time I go. The risotto had the perfect consistency, the blending of cheese was perfect, and the steamed artichoke was delicious.
For dessert we ordered the pana cotta to share. Stacy said the pana cotta was the best she ever had and I had to agree. It was creamy, light, and had just enough sweetness to make it perfect. It was topped with some blueberries and a drizzle of blueberry reduction.
While the food was fantastic, the service was even better. The whole staff, including the owner worked as a well oiled machine. They checked on us frequently, offered to refill our drinks, and toom away dirty dishes when necessary.
I highly recommend Da Carmela.

After several great meals at Da Carmela, we decided to host a birthday celebration there for 20 people. We opted for family style service with salad, pasta, and protein courses, followed by a birthday cake we brought from Sucre Bakery (another find). Delicious food kept coming out of the kitchen, one great offering after another. We were there for 2-3 hours. The service never flagged. Everyone had a great time. Everyone raved about their meals. And everyone loved their experience. For several guests, it was their first time dining at Da Carmela. They told us it wouldn’t be their last.

Wow… what an amazing place. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The pasta was fresh and perfectly cooked, the sauces rich but balanced, and the seafood unbelievably fresh. This was such a great find! Dinner at Da Carmela is like being invited into the chef’s home. Carmella and Steve are all the couple behind this. We started with the Carpaccio de Bresaola con salads de Arugula – so refreshing and delicious! We ordered a bottle of Azeitáo Syrah from Portugal, a great pairing for the entire meal. The Lasagna Bolognese – perfectly prepared and the Linguini panna y speck (Speck in a white wine and cream sauce) was probably one of the best pastas I’ve enjoyed since our trip to Italy a couple of years ago! For dessert, we enjoyed the perfect ending of our meal. The Bombette Sorpreesa – little bundles of tiramisu wrapped in pastry and deep fried, served with a berry sauce – was an outstanding finishing touch!
I would definitely recommend this restaurant – support the up and coming businesses in the area!

I really wanted to like Da Carmela, especially given the glowing reviews and their claim that ingredients are sourced directly from Italy. Unfortunately, the experience fell short. Having lived in Europe, I can say the food here is nowhere close to authentic. The sauces were watered down, lacked flavor, and didn’t cling to the pasta as they should. Overall, it was very disappointing—particularly considering the strong competition in the area and the above-average prices they charge for their dishes.

Blown away by the food. Haven’t had Italian food this good since Little Italy, NYC. Chef Carmela is amazing and makes you feel like you’re in Nonna’s kitchen. Can’t wait to go back and try other dishes. First round was eggplant parm, spinach cannelloni, and some marvelous pastry the Chef invented. Happy New Year!

We had the fettuccine shrimp in a saffron cream sauce at Da Carmela last evening and as with everything else from this amazing kitchen, it was wonderful! The shrimp were perfectly cooked and the saffron cream sauce was excellent. Desserts were equally impressive…the smoothest, velvetiest panna cotta ever. The beef carpaccio is a special treat ($) but is the best I’ve had in a very long time. Last visit I enjoyed the in-house-made ravioli stuffed with ricotta…and spinach? Perfect!
As wonderful as was dinner, the company of Carmela and Steve, the efficiency and pleasant personalities of the wait staff are the stars of the evening.
