The food was delicious and fresh. I had the fried short ribs and a piece of catfish, the only suggestion would be some home made tarter sauce and some type of dipping sauce for the ribs, but both were still tasty. My sons shrimp was good as well. Service was friendly and fast, atmosphere is, it is what it is, but nothing wrong with it, just don’t expect much there. I am looking forward to trying the frid chicken.

When I was a kid, my mom and grandmother would take me to Waco to go shopping, and every time we would stop at this place to eat. My grandmother and I would always get popcorn shrimp, and she would add oysters to her order. (And I’m ONLY a Rockefeller oysters type of lady—if you know, you know.)
So I was coming through Waco yesterday (3/3/2026) and happened to look over and see the parking lot was full—packed, if you will. I turned my truck around, got out, went to the window, and placed my order. Prices have increased, which is totally understandable.
This review is for DJ Seafood Restaurant (Waco, Texas). I ordered the “Catfish” Strip Basket (9 strips, fries, and hushpuppies). I specifically asked if it was REAL catfish because I do not want whiting, swai, or tilapia—only catfish—and the employee assured me multiple times that it was catfish. IT WAS NOT CATFISH!!! It was swai or tilapia. I could only eat 1.5 strips because I could not take the taste. It was awful. It lacked seasoning, tasted like artificial fish, and the grease tasted old. The fries were just frozen crinkle-cut fries, and I never even tasted the hushpuppies. Price was $13.00. My opinion: trash.
I also ordered 2 chicken wings just in case. They were okay—fresh, which was the best part—but they lacked seasoning and weren’t anything to write home about. I got an eggroll too, but I was so disappointed and over it that I didn’t try it.
Customer service was the best part. The window guy is so nice—he greeted everyone with a smile, was patient while I decided, and answered all my questions. It was my childhood brought back to life, but my adult palate will not take me back. Do with this information as you will, but it was quite disappointing, needless to say. Also, they do not have fountain drinks—only canned drinks.

Recently I had D&J’s, I had the fried shrimp combo which came with fries and hush puppy rolls and I was not impressed at all. I wasn’t impressed because everything lacked flavor, the breading on the shrimp completely fell off the shrimp and crumbled, and the hush puppy rolls were dry. It also did not look anything like the pictures they advertise.
However, many years ago I had their chicken wings and those were good. But the seafood from them is a no go, for me.

I have been for a good while, I loved their food but I went the other day waited 10 minutes as usual I thought,I got to my car and tried a piece of popcorn shrimp and it hard and cold. For what I paid for my food there I could of went to Red Lobster. I am just speaking the truth and I hope the owner’s have an opportunity to read this so no one else will have the same experience as I did. Yes I could of took it back and wait another 10 minutes but I was on lunch. I just got back to work heated it up and ate the few pieces of shrimp that were eatable.
