Reviews
The food overall was decent, but our experience was mixed. We ordered Chicken Lollipop, which unfortunately was undercooked and had to be sent back as the inside was still raw beneath the batter. However, the Chicken Biryani was okay, and the Masala Dosa was nicely made with less oil, which we appreciated. The Mango Lassi was very good and refreshing. The Gobi Manchurian was just average — it felt like it needed a little more detail, freshness and love in the preparation. We also tried the Thali, which was passable but not particularly memorable.
With a bit more attention to consistency and refinement in flavours, this place has good potential. A little more care from the kitchen could turn an average meal into a much better one. For now, it’s a mixed experience, but with improvements, it could grow into something special
This is an in-depth and honest review based on a recent dine-in experience at Curry & Cocktail Indian Restaurant in Chelmsford.
Reception & Welcome — 4/5
The welcome was prompt and warm. Within seconds of arrival, I was greeted with a smile, the door was opened, and I was courteously escorted to my table. The initial impression was positive and made me feel genuinely welcomed.
Ambience & Décor — 3.5/5
The ambience is pleasant, with comfortable seating and a clean, minimal décor. It feels suitable for a casual dine-in rather than a special occasion. The restaurant was fairly quiet when I arrived in the evening, though a few diners joined later, creating a calm and relaxed atmosphere.
Service — 4/5
Service was attentive throughout the meal, and food arrived in good time. Staff were observant without being intrusive, which added to the overall comfort of the experience.
Food & Drinks
Cocktail (Passion Fruit-based) — 4.5/5
A refreshing and well-balanced cocktail. Nicely made and enjoyable, setting a strong tone at the start of the meal.
Starter: Chicken 65 — 3.5/5
The portion size and spice level were well judged, and the dish was tasty overall. The chicken could have been slightly more tender. The waiting time was reasonable, arriving approximately 12–15 minutes after ordering.
Mains
Plain Dosa — 4.5/5
Served with a flight of four chutneys, the dosa was crisp, flavoursome, and generously sized. A satisfying dish that delivered well on both texture and taste.
Kerala Fish Curry — 4/5
The curry was flavourful, with a generous quantity of gravy and a large piece of fish, attractively presented on a stylish plate. While the dish tasted good, the fish felt as though it may have been frozen rather than fresh. Using fresh fish would elevate this dish further.
Dessert
Gulab Jamun with Ice Cream — 4/5
Freshly prepared, served hot, and nicely tender. The sweetness of the gulab jamun paired well with the cold ice cream, creating a pleasant contrast.
Observations
• On both visits, a few menu items were unavailable.
• A diner at a nearby table reportedly found a foreign object in their food, which is something the restaurant should treat very seriously.
• The shop signage is difficult to read at night due to bright lighting, typography, and the relatively small signboard size.
Final Verdict
Curry & Cocktail delivers a generally pleasant dining experience with good service, solid flavours, and a few standout items. There is clear potential for improvement—particularly around ingredient quality consistency, menu availability, and external signage.
Will I return?
Yes—but I would like to see a few improvements implemented.
Overall Rating: 4/5
A decent and enjoyable restaurant that, with attention to detail and consistency, could raise its standards further
Our waiter seemed completely confused with our order. We had requested just one masala chaat, but he brought an extra one by mistake. When we told him it wasn’t ours, he took it back, only to bring yet another one five minutes later. We had no idea what was going on. He took that back as well, all the while muttering that two orders had been “wasted”!! Eventually we learned that the repeated dishes were meant for the next table!
Had a wonderful dining experience at Curry Cocktail in Chelmsford with my wife. We started the day with their South Indian breakfast combo – idli, dosa, puri, vada and sweets – and everything was fresh, flavourful, and perfectly cooked. The dosa was crisp, the idli soft, and the vada nicely spiced. A great way to start the day!
For lunch, we tried the red wine mutton biryani, chicken tandoori, fish fry and chicken lollipop. Each dish was outstanding. The biryani was rich and aromatic, the mutton tender, and the starters were crispy, juicy, and full of flavour.
On top of the great food, the prices were very reasonable and the overall experience was excellent. Warm service, good atmosphere, and consistently tasty dishes.
We’ll definitely be coming back again. Highly recommended if you’re in Chelmsford and love good South Indian and Indian food!
What made the visit even better was the friendly service. The staff took the time to explain the dishes in detail, helping me choose the right items and understand the ingredients. Their guidance made the meal even more enjoyable.
The restaurant has a clean, comfortable atmosphere, and the team makes you feel welcomed from the moment you walk in.
If you’re looking for genuine South Indian food with top-class service, Curry and Cocktail is definitely worth visiting!
The service was excellent. The staff were friendly and attentive, and Mr. Navin explained the food details very well, helping us understand the flavours, ingredients, and the best dishes to try. His warm and helpful approach made the experience even better.
The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, making it a perfect spot for both casual meals and family dining.
Curry and Cocktail is a great place if you love South Indian food. Highly recommended!
The decor is basic, the food served on metal trays as it would be in India, so not a posh place, but very comfortable, convivial, and unrushed with a nice family-run air.
Only about 200m from Chelmsford rail station, so if you want food before you travel it is really good.
