Crystal River Pub & Grill is a cozy little bar and grill in Waupaca, and I was genuinely excited to try a new spot for Friday fish. They have a good beer selection and the mixed drinks were solid—but unfortunately, that’s where the positives ended.
We ordered the cod and perch, totaling $36 worth of fish. I was expecting actual pieces of cod, not Van de Kamp–style cod bites straight out of the frozen food aisle. There was barely any fish inside—just breading. The twice-baked potato tasted frozen (Costco-level), and the piece of bread served alongside it was about half the size of my credit card.
The coleslaw was minced so finely it didn’t even require chewing—more like drinking liquid coleslaw. It appeared to come straight from a large pre-made tub (see photos).
Between food and drinks, they got about $50 from us this time, but unfortunately we won’t be back. In hindsight, the red flag should have been pulling in at 6:30 PM on a Wisconsin Friday night and seeing only five people in the bar.
One final and important note: if you pick something up off the floor while cooking, please wash your hands before handling food that’s being served to customers. That’s basic food safety—Food Handling 101.
The young, tall lady behind the counter was very nice, which is the reason for the 4-star rating for service. However, the experience was negatively impacted by the woman cooking. Not washing your hands is unacceptable, and speaking down to coworkers in front of customers is completely unprofessional.
What’s going on with this place?
Wishing you better practices moving forward.

This place is a great stop if you’re hungry or not, the fish is hand breaded very lightly with a taste so outstanding that you can not get enough because it’s that good We ordered the blue gill basket special and there’s no disappointment here, simply delicious and the tarter sauce is perfect! Also you must try the homemade soup which is also very tasty so if you’re in the Waupaca area be sure to check out this joint for its hometown atmosphere, awesome service, and really friendly people!

Great food! Salad fresh, crisp, delicious and plentiful. We went on a Friday and I had the Walleye bites, which were awesome. Can’t go wrong in my opinion.

This place is totally awesome!! The food here is superb, the staff is very attentive very friendly, it is so clean it’s more of a 4-star restaurant that a place that should be called The Filling Station. They had a young man in there doing DJ bingo for music. It was a very upbeat and entertaining. This would be an awesome way to spend any Friday evening would be to go to Crystal Lounge / The Filling Station score good food good company good service in a great atmosphere.

We went there for the first time to play DJTrivia. The interior was cozy and clean. Those of us who ordered burgers found them deliciously fresh, juicy and seared to perfection. My daughter’s half salad was huge and fresh. All of us were very pleased with our selections. We’ll definitely go back to enjoy their Tuesday night’s entertainment and food!
