We had a great time recently at the Cross Keys! They managed to squeeze our group of 10 in for a Sunday lunch at last minute which we were really grateful for (male over the phone was very friendly and helpful!)

When we arrived we had a lovely warm welcome! We were shortly shown to our table followed by a very yummy roast with plenty of veg and gravy – the roast potatoes were fab! Our server Sammy was very attentive, friendly and helped get whatever we needed!

We already can’t wait to come back next month!

Excellent, supportive and welcoming staff. The environment is brilliant considering the world we live in. Matt, Casey and the team should be really proud of the service they offer. The menu has improved and the bar staff make the experience so much better

Don’t let the AI bot put you off! The cross keys is Still a fantastic family dining spot. Straightforward tasty filling food in a lovely rustic setting with prompt wonderful service . The two lovely young ladies that served us were Emily and Sammy. We needed to book a meal at short notice. We needed to take our very well behaved dog. And wanted somewhere that did something other than just chicken nuggets and chips for the kids. The online booking system didn’t seem to be working so we picked up the phone. The AI bot was off putting t first but I can see why they use it to free up busy waiting and bar staff. Our main concern was that they may not accept our dog, but they do allow well behaved dogs in the bar eating area. The food was spot on hearty and filling. Also very well priced. What I like is that the kids can have mini adult meals such as gammon or steak and chips.

One of the traditions to experience in the UK at the end of January is Burns Night, and I found The Cross Keys in Taunton offering a special menu. I started with crispy pheasant strips and hot honey – tender game in a golden coating, paired with rocket and pear salad and finished with a drizzle of sweet honey.
For the main, I had British venison haunch steak, perfectly cooked medium-rare and served with a rich red wine sauce, buttered mash, herb-roasted carrots, and butternut squash.
To finish, I chose the Cranachan Sundae – a sweet and boozy treat of whisky and honey whipped cream, topped with toasted oats and fresh raspberries. A delicious way to celebrate Burns Night!

We went for Sunday lunch. The restaurant was busy. Bit of a wait for food but they explained they had just had a large party arrive. Food tasty and plenty of it.
Waitresses checked in with us regularly, the whole area was clean and so we’re the toilets!!!!

Really was not great at all, the place was basically empty yet it still took 30 minutes to have our order taken and a further 40 minutes before our starter appeared. In this time we weren’t apologised to or informed about any delay or even offered anymore drinks! Just sat waiting in a silent empty restaurant. Tables around us were all complaining, one next to us offered a replacement meal but the person refused due to not wanting to wait any longer. We weren’t apologised offered a free dessert due to the slow service, reluctant as not wanting to wait another hour for our food arrived, however we did accept the offer and 20 minutes later they came back to take our order! it really was quite comical at how bad it was. Unfortunately the food that did arrive specifically for myself was disgusting and I did not eat it, after a total of 3 hours in the place we then went to McDonald’s on the way home, won’t bother trying again.

Nice location with large beer garden. Sadly for me part or my dinner was let down by over cooked potatoe-less chips they were pretty much just crisped which is such a shame as the burger was tasty… the other thing was the food came out barely warm it was like it was sat for a bit before it come out to us. Starter of Korean chicken was delicious. I can’t say I would choose this as a first choice any time soon. Only seemed to have very young staff on apart from I’m guessing a supervisor guy who was running around doing most of the serving and order taking.

The steak sandwich was excellent. The steak pie was tasty but a bit on the small side.

Really nice pub, quite cosy. Service a bit slow but in all fairness they were very busy at the time of our visit. Food ok. Both had steak and chips, nothing special but not bad price at £16.49. Can’t understand why they don’t have sauces and vinegar on the tables? Also the cruets doubled as both salt and pepper but no salt in the ones on our table nor some of the other tables. So never bothered having any on our chips. Dessert was very good however particularly the bramley apple tart.

Exceptional Sunday lunch there on 31st August, staff were super-friendly, service was great, food was exemplary, and all very reasonably priced too. I dined around 1230hrs, and the place was getting pretty busy by 1315hrs, so my recommendation would be eat early or eat after 2pm. This is my second visit in as many weeks, and everything has been top-notch.
