I love this little Middlebury Staple! I’ve eaten incredible restaurant quality foods at venues and functions (think tar tar and beautifully rendered duck breasts under a scenic Vermont backdrop or at a local food festival) cooked by Lou and his guys and Served by Jenny and her incredible wait and bar staff countless times, as The Crooked Ladle, the catering company. Many locals have, many times at many events! The real deal is sitting down in 51 Main in downtown Middlebury within the restaurant and eating through Lou’s menus. It seems like there are clearly some crowd favorite dishes that will stay on the menu forever, which is true of any restaurant but entree dishes and many appetizers will change seasonally to follow local produce and ingredients and these dishes are where the magic is!! The waitstaff and bartenders are always so cool and calm. They make the effort to recognize and remember you whether it’s from an event you attended as a guest and met the staff or from previous dinners at the restaurant in town. Food is served fast and there is a family vibe to the front of house staff that fits perfectly with warm and cozy dining room. There is a long beautiful bar that runs the length of the dining room on one side and the space has warm red brick walls, and high ceilings, with local artwork and plants decorating every little corner. (Also- Ask about buying artwork! Chances are a vermont artist made it, it’s for sale, and they would love to know they’ve decorated a home somewhere! )
TLDR: I recently had yet another really great experience and meal in the restaurant and realized my leaving this review was long overdue! Go eat food here! Or get takeout and eat this food on your couch! Call and have food cooked at your event! If you’re in Middlebury, this is a must try meal, whichever of the many ways you can find The Crooked Ladle feeding the town/people here.

There are but few places to eat, where the entire menu is like reading a love letter to the authors favorite ingredients. The food is a dazzling mix of scientific precision and creative abandon while the entire staff is at once professional, knowledgeable and perfectly human. They are friends and neighbors and family and once you step inside this beautifully designed space you understand what it means to love food. To love cooking. To love your community.
This is a truly, truly special place, long may it be.

First time visit and very impressed! This is a cozy, new, college-town restaurant that surprises both with its sophistication and quality. My wife had a delicious ricotta gnocchi dish while I had a classic Duck confit. Both came with crispy, fresh market vegetables (e.g. parsnips, sweet potato puree, pickled onions) with accompanying flavorful sauces which defy our ability to define. Nonetheless, all was delicious, and topped off with excellent wines as well as scrumptious desserts. We rate this the best restaurant in Middlebury!

Great place to enjoy cocktails and a meal!
Our server made time to engage in conversation even though she was very busy.
Our food was tasty and fairly priced. We did not leave hungry.
Highly recommend visiting Crooked Ladle if your anywhere near Middlebury.

Had a last minute dinner date at the bar with my husband on Valentines day. The restaurant was full but we prefer a bar seat anyway, staff were so friendly and helpful even though they were busy! Drink menu was fun and the food came out so quickly. Only downside is the street parking. Will absolutely be back another time!

Wow wow wow! Can’t speak highly enough about this place. The service was fantastic, the food was also so complex and standout. We love to go out to eat in Baltimore MD, have been to several James Beard winners in the area, and this place firmly ranks as good if not better than most of those. Make sure you leave room for desert- the Italian custard they were serving on our visit was so insanely good. Probably in the top two of my fave desserts of all time. This chef is really talented, the creativity in the flavor profiles is wonderful.

I really enjoyed the Crooked Ladle. Everything we ordered was very tasty, well seasoned, and came out hot. The kitchen is on point. The staff and servers were great.

I’ve come here several times and ordered something different almost every time, and have never been disappointed! They have a great rotating variety of cocktails and I’m always excited to see what’s on the menu. Foods trend rich and are always tasty. (The only time I’ve disliked something was my own fault for ordering the brisket with horseradish coleslaw when I know I don’t like horseradish- but anyway, know thyself). Pictured are the falafel wrap, flank steak, and some cocktails which I have regrettably forgotten the details of besides that the green one had Midori and was just as good as it looks. Not pictured were a swordfish steak, a delicious flourless chocolate torte, and a nonalcoholic cocktail with ginger in it that was actually so good. (Oftentimes ginger drinks are not spicy enough for my liking, but this one was perfect- I was getting punched in the throat by ginger and enjoying every moment). This is my go-to spot for date nights and out-of-town guests, and the ambiance is always great too. Awesome spot.

Let me start of by being very clear this is a restaurant…not just a food truck, not just a catering company. Its a beautiful, amazing, delicious restautant that my love and I happened upon, only by chance since the owners dont classify this place as a restaurant on Google Maps…they need to! Do IT!! Thank you!
this time in Vermont is different, the state is dealing with mass flooding events and lots of devestation, but eveyone was clam, cool, and just livin’ their Vermont Lives.
We are in town for a Wedding and after a 9 mile hike needed food and drink. Most places in Middlebury dont open until 4ish but lukcy for us the owners of the Crooked Ladle were open due to some unique cercumstances.
We started with the cocktials, I had the Corpse Reviver #2 and my love had the green one…The Plant Lady. Now one of the owners was our bartender and she warned us the she is not the normal barkeep. But the drinks were great. Due to this unique situation and losing power the night before we only had a couple options – lite bites. We immediately ordered the Fries and also the Shrimp Noodle Salad. Ok kids, I’m going to say something, and its big…THESE ARE SOME OF THE BEST FRIES AND DIPPING SAUCE THAT WE HAVE EVER HAD, LIKE FOR REALS!!!
They are really great and that sauce, lemony and extra horseradish YES!! HELL YES! Thank you! The shirmp salad was also delicious, tons of flavor and fresh ingredients. We cleared our plates and opted for a Key Lime Pie with raspberry coulis. Very good! We also decided to had a couple more drinks to celebrate our newly found favorite French Fries!! I had an espresso martini and my love the Undertaker – which they pineapple jalapeno mixture in house. It was perfect. HOW could it be finding such an amazing place to eat in VERMONT?? Well, its the people!
Thank you to the owners of Crooked Ladle – I highly recommend you name the resturant The Crooked Ladle – thats it, no catering or truck…
