You don’t expect to find this level of sushi walking down Second Avenue, but Crave Sushi Bar absolutely delivers.

Located at 947 Second Ave in Midtown East, Manhattan, Crave is a Japanese sushi restaurant that blends traditional nigiri with creative, modern bites. It looks understated from the outside, but once the food hits the table, you understand exactly what they’re doing.

The sashimi was incredibly clean and fresh. The thinly sliced white fish in citrus with jalapeño had the perfect balance of delicate texture and subtle heat. Light, bright, and refreshing.

The seared salmon nigiri was a standout. Lightly torched with a touch of sauce on top, rich without being heavy. The seared white fish with sesame and chili had depth and just enough char to bring everything together.

The uni had beautiful texture so I grabbed a photo, but I don’t eat shellfish, so my friend happily handled that one.

One of the more creative bites was the salmon and avocado cube over rice, layered neatly and finished with thin strips of nori. Clean presentation and great balance.

The spicy tuna roll had real texture and flavor, not overly mayo-heavy like so many places.

Even dessert delivered. The warm chocolate chip cookie with melting vanilla ice cream was exactly what you want to end a sushi dinner in Manhattan.

The space feels intimate and relaxed. Perfect for a casual weeknight in Midtown East or a low-key date night.

As someone who spends a lot of time in Midtown Manhattan for real estate, I’m always paying attention to the places that elevate a block. Restaurants like Crave Sushi Bar make Second Avenue more interesting.

If you’re looking for quality Japanese sushi in Midtown East Manhattan that blends traditional nigiri with modern touches, Crave Sushi Bar is absolutely worth a visit.

It was dinner time and we happened upon this place that looked good and luckily for us there were two spots available at the bar! The food was delicious and they even gave us a free handroll for sitting at the bar! My first time in New York and when I return I will definitely return to Crave again!

We visited from out of town and chose this sushi spot based on its great reviews. The salmon crispy rice was amazing—we even wanted seconds! The shrimp and crab dumplings and Persian cucumber salad were both very good (though not as spicy as expected). My main dish, the spicy Maine lobster roll, was incredible, and the Tuna Toro hand roll was also excellent. However, the Bluefin Tuna Toro roll was disappointing—the mix with shishito peppers didn’t work and left an off taste.

Service was amazing. Our waiter was so attentive and positive. Food was 10/10. Restaurant week menu was such a great deal. The open hand rolls (regular menu) i couldn’t recommend more. The toro especially! Get the cookie for dessert 🙂

Great food. Great experience. We had an amazing time sitting at the sushi bar. Service was attentive and made great recommendations. The bigeye tuna wasabi was one of the best dishes I’ve had in a while. The decor and music were fitting and enjoyable. I will be back.

I wanted to give this establishment some grace as my first visit fell on a holiday, but the experience was a series of significant highs and lows.
We had a 9:00 PM reservation, but upon arrival, the line was out the door. The lobby was incredibly cramped, leaving guests bunched together in a very small area while waiting to be seen.
 ***The Facilities & Service
The most concerning aspect was that the restrooms were out of service. While hand sanitizer was provided, I found this unacceptable for a dining establishment; had I known this before eating, I likely would have left immediately.
The service was a bit of a contradiction. Our server was understandably distracted by the holiday rush and, unfortunately, seemed more inclined to say “no” to requests rather than checking for solutions. However, the owner/manager was on the floor and was absolutely excellent—providing some of the best service I’ve experienced in a while.

***The Food
The culinary experience was hit-or-miss:
Yellowtail Sashimi: Very fresh, though the flavor profile was a bit bland.
Brown Butter Scallops: The highlight of the night. Perfectly executed and highly recommended.

^^^The “Wagyu”: This was the biggest disappointment. As someone familiar with the marbling and texture of authentic A5 Wagyu, what was served did not meet those standards. It felt like a clear case of false advertisement, and I would have sent it back if my date hadn’t insisted otherwise.

********Final Verdict
While I appreciate the management’s hands-on approach and the freshness of some seafood, the lack of basic facilities (water was also reportedly unavailable at one point) and the questionable Wagyu quality make it hard to justify the price point. I’m not sure I’ll be returning

So happy I celebrated my big birthday here as the service was impeccable, even for the outdoor seating in summer. The staff are experts on the menu and anticipating allergies. First gluten-free shrimp and crab dumplings I have found that are filling and delicious. Great quality fish and generous hospitality that matched the luminous energy of a very special personal moment. Highly recommend and definitely coming back for many more memorable evenings!

Appreciate and came for the sustainable/environmentally conscious fish/seafood. Two sushi dishes were buttered which is surprising in bad way. Food wasn’t bad but could be better. Staff and ambience are great; idea of conscious seafood is what brought us
