Imagine my delight, when I stepped out of a foggy, 56 degree morning and into a cozy dining room with a fire burning in the hearth! A lovely young lady greeted me with a warm smile. She helped me place my order, gave me a buzzer, and explained how commissary style dining works. I then grabbed a lunch tray and utensils and poured myself a mug of coffee. It was early, so I was able to get a table next to the fireplace. It was quiet and I enjoyed the soft Hawaiian music that was playing. My buzzer soon rang and I headed to the kitchen area to pick up my food. I ordered the Haupia pancakes, which are a local specialty. Unfortunately, this is where the five star experience ended. Although the pancakes looked beautiful on the plate, they were mediocre. And the coffee, was just ok. However, because of the great atmosphere, service, and value, I would return to try something else on the menu.

Great restaurant, open to everyone. But if you stay at military lodging, breakfast buffet included. Food yummy and reasonable priced. Ate multiple breakfasts and suppers. Both meals always good! Staff super friendly and kind.

At home breakfast buffet with very less oil or butter. Scrambled eggs made with very less butter or oil and no meat. And you get bacon on the side. So that worked for both vegans and meat lovers.

Pancakes were awesome too!! Love this place and location

If you like taking your money and throwing in the cash, then go ahead and eat here. You are better off getting snacks from the store.

I gave it 2 stars for the fish and rib. The veggies were frozen veggies. They were so GROSS, and some were hard. The rice was plain, no butter. Only salt and pepper were in small packets.

You will pay the same price as a nice sit-down restaurant in town, where you will get served and not get your own food and drinks.

The salad and cookies were out in the open, where they can be sneezed on. The cookies we had were doughy – GROSS.

I HATE wasting money, and this was the biggest waste of money on the island.

I think they had to go catch the fish – yes, it took that long to get the food.

We didn’t even have ice for our drinks.

There’s no relaxing while you eat with LOUD music blasting in the next room.

For the next few days, I’ll be eating snacks from the store.

I don’t understand the folks giving this place a 5 Star.

Parking = walked from room

Service = 3 Stars

Food = 2 Stars

Drinks = 1 Star – fountain drinks

Dessert = 1 Star

Cleanliness = 4 Stars, being so outdated can’t tell if it’s clean or old

Two stars is being generous but the staff is super nice. Really over cooked and over seasoned cafeteria food for breakfast for $18. Grey eggs. Burnt potatoes swimming in salt. Unless it comes free with your room you’re better off somewhere else.

The value is great. It’s not going to blow your mind, but the cost is quite reasonable, the food is good, and the portion size (breakfast sandwich with potatoes) is totally satisfying. Pretty amazing for being in a NP.

2023: this is one of the places you can eat if you are staying at the Kilauea military camp lodge inside Volcanos National Park Hawaii. You order from the lady at the register. They serve breakfast and dinner and are closed in between. When your meal is ready they will call your number. Drinks, ice cream, salads are included. The meal was pretty good for comfort food. I had the roast pork wish mashed potatoes, gravy and side of veggies. It is served in paper containers. This dining room is pretty run down with zero esthetics. But it was priced at a good value.

Annual Halloween costume contest was fun as always. They had designed 4 sweet and spooky specialty cocktails for the evening. I bought 2 drinks at once before the cocktail line got long. The dj played a variety of dance beats that kept the crowd moving. The empty cups were removed in a timely manner.

Food was available next door in the mess hall early in the evening.

I should have trusted the bad reviews. The place had 2 other customers inside.$12.50 for the “buffet ” cold sausage, cold pancakes, cold hard biscuits. I think it was bacon but it tasted like old pork grease and was cold and tough. The gravy was OK and they have a small amount of fresh melon and pineapple. Avoid this place. I hope I don’t get sick later today.
