The table we got seated at had no light over it. Noticeably really dark to be reading the menu there. We asked the waitress what items were recommended for a vegan diner. She went to get the manager to speak to us about vegan options. We also wanted to confirm our reservation for Thanksgiving.
The manager mentioned sides of vegetables mostly. She said the place is known for meats and dairy. There is no allergin menu information, which many other chain restaurants provide. She said the menu for Thanksgiving day will be limited, but some of the vegetables would be available. When asked about our Thanksgiving reservation she said they do not take reservations for that day! It’s a first come first served, wait in line type of thing. She wanted to know the manager’s name that my husband spoke to on the phone. He couldn’t remember, but it was a guy. She then had our waitress come back to take our order.
I asked the waitress questions about butter, chicken stock and shared cooking oils. She went to ask the kitchen my questions. She came back and said they can substitute margarine instead of dairy butter on broccoli, corn or carrots. There is chicken stock in the seasoned rice. The steak fries are cooked in the same oil as meats.
I ended up ordering a vegetable plate that is 4 sides you pick for $11. I got broccoli, carrots, green beans and corn. The waitress was not sure about the choices being what I was looking for. She said the broccoli was steamed. It was the best thing I ate. The corn was just plain off the cob corn. The green beans tasted smokey, so it freaked me out enough to not eat them. The carrots were a darker color, were VERY soft and tasted sweet like honey. Honey is not vegan and I did mention I wanted to avoid it. So we paid $11 for me to eat two tiny side dishes of corn and broccoli. I gave the other sides to my husband.
My husband had the chicken and dumplings with a side, and the meatloaf with two sides. He also got carrots and broccoli. Along with a small plate of steak fries. There were more dumplings than chicken in his bowl. The meatloaf was burnt on top and very greasy. He tried putting the meatloaf on a napkin on his plate to squeeze some grease out of it. It barely did anything to help. The carrots were a lighter color and he didn’t like his carrots or my carrots. He only had a couple bites of my green beans. He said overall he was disappointed and it was not good food.
The manager never came back to our table to ask about our meal. We told the waitress it was not good and she just kind of ignored it, asked a different question and gave us the bill.
So, we have no Thanksgiving reservation. Today is the 17th of November. The food sucks and is not good for people with dietary restrictions. We will NOT have 7 people waiting in line on Thanksgiving Day. We will not eat at any Cracker Barrel ever again. Do not recommend.
The food came out quickly, tasted fresh, and the team worked together seamlessly to make the whole meal feel relaxed and enjoyable. It’s clear that the employees here take pride in making guests feel taken care of.
If you’re looking for friendly service, great comfort food, and a comfortable atmosphere, this Cracker Barrel is absolutely worth the visit. Highly recommended!
