We arrived right when everyone else did. Places filled up while they were understaffed. Food took a little longer than normal… But our server was great and kept drinks full. Besides… It was better to sit there than in traffic.
Food while it took a while was correct and eaten quickly. Took a while for the bill to appear. Then we stood at the register looking for a person for a bit. (It happens.)
Overall… I think we saw the first sign for this locations 25 miles before. Worth the stop if it’s on the way.
Aside from the slow thing… The staff was very friendly. Location was well kept.
No doubt about it….you come here for comfort food and satisfying eats! It’s a fun, nostalgic place with a gift shop that has some of the best finds, candies and goods. Super attentive & friendly table service. The restaurant has a great “everyone help out” service mantra. You get your food faster this way as well. We enjoyed our meals and the deserts fully. Never knew we could skip the cornbread & just get a basket of “killer” biscuits. We did tonight. Always a memorable visit when stopping here.
I wish there were locations closer within the DC city limits….I would come here weekly!
Our guide through this homespun tableau was a young woman named Shay, whose attentiveness was as unpretentious as the fare itself, a refreshing counterpoint to the often-stifling obsequiousness one encounters elsewhere.
The repast began with a platter of scrambled eggs, bacon, and their signature hashbrown casserole. The eggs, a vibrant yellow, were not over-tormented, retaining a pleasing moisture. The bacon, that stalwart of the American breakfast, achieved a commendable crispness without succumbing to brittleness. And the hashbrown casserole – a comforting, cheesy amalgam that, while perhaps not the peak of culinary artistry, possessed an undeniable, almost nostalgic, deliciousness.
Then arrived the pancakes, an edifice of fluffy, golden discs, generously adorned with fresh strawberries, a dusting of powdered sugar like a gentle snowfall, and a dollop of cream that threatened to melt into blissful surrender. These were not mere griddle cakes; they were a testament to the simple joy of well-executed batter, light and airy, a perfect vehicle for the accompanying syrup.
Even a more robust offering, the steak and eggs, presented with another serving of that satisfying hashbrown casserole, did not falter. The steak, cooked to a surprising tenderness, its surface bearing the honest marks of the grill, paired harmoniously with the perfectly fried eggs, their yolks yielding with a gentle prod.
And for those inclined towards a more… midday repast, the chicken tenders and fries. Often a pedestrian offering, these tenders possessed a surprisingly delightful crunch to their coating, revealing moist, flavorful chicken within. The accompanying frites were crisp, golden, and appropriately salted – a simple pleasure, executed with care.
In a world awash with culinary pretension, there is a certain courage in offering straightforward, well-prepared food that aims not to astonish, but to satisfy. My experience at Cracker Barrel, guided by the capable Shay and evidenced by these surprisingly tasty and delicious entrees, was just that: a profoundly pleasant, unpretentious, and, yes, genuinely enjoyable meal. Sometimes, the most delicious truths are found in the most unexpected of places.
We had requested four glasses of water, but one never made it to our table. It was frustrating to see other patrons being served while we waited patiently. When our food finally arrived, the waiter didn’t bring the plates along with it. After waiting another 10 minutes for the plates, we asked for them, and the waiter offered apologies, which unfortunately felt insincere after hearing it multiple times.
On a positive note, the food itself was quite good, and I can’t complain about that. However, the service experience left much to be desired. I hope they can improve in this area for future guests.”
Cons: service is slow, portions got smaller, there’s usually a wait since so many people come here to eat.
Still a nice place to eat that’s easy on your wallet.
I have to say the steakburger (a hamburger served by itself, not in a bun, was AWESOME! And a nice size. I ordered it medium rare, it probably came medium but was nice and juicy and barely pink and very tasty so it was fine. Well beyond my expectations.
I was doing low carb, so ordered that, with mayo on the side (mixed that with the hot sauce on the table for a delicious alternative to ketchup!) and the broccoli – also excellent and the turnip greens, which surprisingly were EXTREMELY tasty, not too salty, and definitely not like those really salty/meaty flavored southern canned greens. They were very tasty. Yummy. I’m thinking they were cooked in chicken broth.
I ate every bite of it ALL!
We had an 11 yr old autistic child with us and every one was very nice and he enjoyed himself a lot. Especially investigating the candy dept in the shop after. He had a big breakfast with 3 pancakes, eggs, some kind of breakfast meat I think. Ate it all too! And that was a LOT of food.
Overall definitely a great luncheon!
I bought their giant checker set that comes with a rug for a board and 3″ checkers in a sturdy muslin drawstring bag. Well made! For my grand kids. Even the baby can teethe on the giant checkers. Lol LOL.
