Walking into the restaurant I was immediately hit with a feeling of nostalgia and homey comfort. The decor and atmosphere remind me of my younger years and how restaurants used to be. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The menu is quite large, offering breakfast all day as well as great lunch and dinner options. I chose to have breakfast and ordered the Cozy Mess. It was delicious! I will definitely be returning to try more items on the menu.

Cozy Cafe in Johnston, Iowa lives up to its name in all the best ways. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere feels warm and welcoming, like a neighborhood spot where regulars are known by name. The space is comfortable without trying too hard—simple décor, soft lighting, and a relaxed vibe that makes it easy to settle in, whether you’re meeting a friend or enjoying a quiet moment alone.

The food is classic, comforting, and consistently satisfying. Cozy Cafe focuses on hearty, familiar dishes done well, making it a great choice for breakfast or lunch. Portions are generous without being over-the-top, and everything tastes fresh and thoughtfully prepared. It’s the kind of menu that appeals to a wide range of people, from early-morning coffee drinkers to families looking for an easy, reliable meal.

What really sets Cozy Cafe apart is the service. The staff is friendly, attentive, and genuinely kind, creating an experience that feels personal rather than rushed. You never feel like just another customer passing through.

Overall, Cozy Cafe is a Johnston favorite for good reason. It’s comfortable, dependable, and full of small-town charm—a place you’ll want to return to again and again.

Our department at a company near Cozy Cafe, is a big fan of this local gem and orders from them quite frequently. Today, we encountered some difficulties while placing an online order, so I decided to visit the cafe with our list. The host was incredibly accommodating and took the time to label each person’s takeout box with their name, preventing any food from being mistakenly served to the wrong person once it arrived at the office. Every single order was accurate and still piping hot when I returned. Support your local businesses and give Cozy Cafe a try!

Cozy Cafe is that rare place that leans into who they are, then delivers an authentic food experience. Old-school diner vibe, and they don’t veer from their look. Located just off Highway 80, great stop if you’re traveling through Des Moines and only 15 minutes from Ankeny’s District! Booths, tables, and a counter. Ask about their Blue Plate Specials, as we loved ours! Our server (Abby) was great. Atmosphere and pricing were real good.

Loved the simple cafe feel & the eclectic mugs that our coffee was served in! The food was not bad but not the best I’ve had either unfortunately. The pancake was large but pretty thin, I like my pancakes on the fluffier side. The server was friendly!

I am a big breakfast fan and this is one of the best!!! Been here a few times traveling through and it never disappoints. The food is homemade goodness and the people are friendly and deliver the expected Midwest and hometown customer service. A small stage in the back features some of the best local entertainment on the weekends which makes Cozy Cafe an excellent family restaurant.

I ended up stopping by twice on this trip. The staff is smart and responsive. The food is cooked to order correctly and was great tasting. The look and feel is of an aging cafe with a homey feeling. I recommend it for breakfast all day.
