This was a great place to chill out and get some work done on my laptop. The peaceful atmosphere and amazing service made for a cozy day of studying and relaxation. Shoutout to the baristas for being so sweet and helping me pick a great drink (Tree of Souls Pecan Pie Latte with maple and cinnamon — SO good)!

I’ll definitely be back! Thank you everyone at Counterspell for your dedication to the craft! You guys rock ☕️ ❤️

Considering that the atmosphere is designed with table-top gamers in mind (like D&D and Magic the Gathering), this is the perfectly artistic place to enjoy both gaming and coffee. There are tables large enough to play table top games, as well as smaller tables for cozier gatherings or work time. The coffee is creative and I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve had so far. Special shoutout to the conchas as they are they are homemade with love and the perfect pairing for coffee. The Fortune’s Favor comes with a homemade sweet potato marshmallow and everything is made with homemade or quality ingredients. I also enjoy the inclusion of the arts, as they have handmade ceramics and jewelry for sale.

A HUGE WIN FOR THE NNN! This cafe is perfect and will be loved by all. The drinks and food were to die for. Chai lattes pictured here are the best in town and we also tried a conchas! DONT SKIP! Truly so tasty and we love the vibes!

Really great use of space as an anchor for the Ward redevelopment – I loved the big windows. The fancy specialty drinks are on the board (Maple Miso was an interesting new flavor) but also their more “normal” menu at the counter. Lots of people were working/reading while enjoying their drinks/food.

Super cute place that offers uncommon coffee combos. Baristas seemed well-versed and able to speak to each unique item. As they expand I would love to see more options on the menu and look forward to visiting again!

The ambiance is great, and the coffee quality is excellent! It’s a great start to the development in the Ward Bakery building and the overall aesthetic works well with the old brick building. I look forward to seeing how they will continue to develop their decor.

The quality of the current food offerings and coffee beverages is phenomenal. I was unsure of the “Counterspell” title and what I would see, but it is subtle, comfortable, and clean. Give them a try!

The cappuccino, cortado, and chai latte were all delicious and some of the best I’ve had, especially in the area.

We stopped in on a whim on one of the soft opening days as it is in the neighborhood. The decor was more understated than Cloud Walking, which was a good stylistic choice, giving due regard to the industrial building in which it is located. On the whole, though, the blood and occult-ish theme felt a bit grim and had too much of an edge to it. The red-toned countertops and preternatural art made for a less-relaxing ambience than I had hoped for. Visiting during Halloween week was fun because it felt seasonally-appropriate, but that kind of ambience is not something we cared to experience on a daily basis.

One member of our group ordered one of the popular selections, a latte with cinnamon, and she said it was the best latte she had ordered in years, which is high praise from someone who knows coffee well. I had the “corntado,” which was an abomination and utterly undrinkable. When placing the almost-full drink on the dish tray, we saw another almost-full corntado sitting there.

The s’mores bites were fine. They tasted rather unbalanced, with the dark chocolate overwhelming the rest of the flavors.

Overall we felt that Counterspell was a place worth visiting, but not a place that any of us would go to for a daily cup or to meet up with friends. There is just too much intrusion from the ambience for it to be a place to relax.

I love this warm, cozy, delicious neighborhood cafe! On a Sunday morning just one week after opening, the place was bustling: families with kids enjoying hot cocoa and pastries, students and faculty on their laptops, friends catching up over specialty lattes. (I loved the sweet potato/allspice latte; a friend loved his risky “corntado,” in spite of having been warned by another reviewer here that it was “an abomination,” lol.) My LA-transplant buddy and Mexican-pastry aficionado said the concha was the best one he’d had since LA; it was certainly the best one I’d had ever. The witchy theme isn’t overdone, but it’s just enough to make the space feel special and magical. That red marble countertop is a whole vibe. Simply an incredible addition to the neighborhood and to South Bend’s coffee scene.

Some of the most unique and delicious latte flavors I’ve seen in a while. You have to get the leaf glider! Atmosphere and vibes are also so nice. Not too loud you could definitely do work. Will be coming again!!
