Coop’s Place — great location right near the French Market.
I came in with high expectations after being told this was the best jambalaya in New Orleans. The jambalaya supreme was spicy and tasty, but I found it a bit dry and the rice slightly overcooked — good, but not quite the revelation I was anticipating.

The real star of the meal, however, was the crawfish and corn chowder — absolutely delicious. Rich, flavorful, and the kind of dish that makes you want to order a second bowl. Worth the visit for that alone.

A fun, unpretentious spot near the French Market. Go for the soup, and judge the jambalaya for yourself.

5 stars all around! Food, service, ambiance – all spot on for the vibe of New Orleans. My server was great! I was undecided on what to eat and a solo traveler. He said well then you have to order the Coop’s Taste Plate. I’m so glad I took his advice. Everything was phenomenal!! The gumbo is spicy but in a good spicy way, not the burn three layers off your tongue spicy. I am not a big fried chicken fan but ate it and loved it! So tender and crispy. Coop’s is a must for anyone visiting New Orleans.

Note: there’s construction on the street but you can still get to Coop’s on the sidewalk.

This place is small but busy because it is literally a bar. Explains why 21 and under are not allowed. It only has a couple of tables. Supposedly known for Jambalaya.

Cajun fried chicken- delicious. Highly recommended

Cajun pasta – not bad

Jalapeño poppers – not bad

Gumbo – not bad

Chicken Tchoupitulas – everything was good except the chicken. Chicken was overcooked and dried, totally ruined the whole dish.

Jambalaya- rice was mushy, more like a porridge. This is supposed to be their know dish but it was disappointed.

Desserts:
This is a bar so no, desserts are not available here.

Sadly, Cleanliness is in question as all foods coming out of the kitchen passed through a hallway that has garbage cans lined up on one side and washrooms on the others.

Coop’s Place is a small, easy-to-miss alleyway bar that you can find right beside the French Market. It’s a casual spot with a genuinely good vibe and serves up some excellent food.
I had the jambalaya here, and it was mighty good, packed with flavor and just the right amount of spice. The bartenders are nice, adding to the easygoing atmosphere.
A crucial tip for visiting is that this is the kind of classic New Orleans bar that serves great food, but it is primarily a small, casual space. If you’re looking for quality local food in a chill, slightly hidden spot, Coop’s Place is a definite win.

While its in a kind of sketchy area. It was well worth it. We were told that the staff would “roast” you, but our waiter was awesome! Amazing food, especially the fried chicken. I definitely give it a solid 10 out of 10!

Went here for lunch with my parents during Mardi Gras weekend. It was a 20 minute wait but we were able to get a good table. We got a gator bite appetizer and each ordered the Taste of Coop’s sampler which included a piece of fried chicken, shrimp creole, red beans & rice and jambalaya. The gator bites were good along with the fried chicken, red beans and rice. The shrimp creole was surprisingly very hot & spicy. The jambalaya was definitely the best dish in the sampler being not too heavily seasoned or spicy, just right. I can see why the jambalaya was referenced in the Simpsons episode of New Orleans. Other than the jambalaya, it was an ok experience.

I wanted to try all the places everyone talks about when coming to New Orleans and this is one of them. I was really looking forward to eat in this place. I ordered the rabbit and sausage jambalaya…it’s spicy and there’s the taste of tomato that’s it! Other than those two there’s no other flavors in this plate. I thought it was going to be an explosion of flavors…bland that’s all you get.
My bf ordered the shrimp creole, it tastes exactly like the rabbit sausage jambalaya, spicy and the only thing you’ll be able to taste is the tomato, no other flavors.
I’ve never been to a restaurant when I have not eaten the food, well… this one was the one for me, I ate 3 bites and I didn’t eat the rest of the food. I was so disappointed ☹️
I would describe it as “bar food”

Service: There was one person seating everyone, the place was almost full and he was doing a great job!
I like the atmosphere, very old looking. A dive bar (I like dive bars)

Visiting from Atlanta, I was told this has the best fried chicken ever. I can now second that notion. I got the Coop’s Taste Plate which was absolutely amazing. Just enough kick and spice. This authentic cuisine was top tier. I actually had enough for multiple servings for just my one self. I also liked the little vibe of the place. l definitely recommend!

I got the sampler as my first taste (ever) of New Orleans cuisine.

Man the gumbo packs a punch! But it was delicious, everything was delicious.
I couldn’t have asked for a better first meal in New Orleans and an introduction to Cajun/Creole cuisine.

I got some green beans in bacon sauce as a side to the sampler

I have lived in TRUE cajun country (Houma, LA) my entire life so this is a authentic review from a authentic local. I have had TONS of Gumbo my whole life – every Mom and Aunt in my family can make it and its 5 star Michelin star worthy every damn time…. Coops Gumbo is the only Gumbo that I have ever had that matches with all of em neck and neck. I cannot recommend this place enough! (Dont tell my momma I said this about your Gumbo cause I am gonna be slapped if she finds out I said it was neck and neck with hers lol)
