There aren’t really any true “affordable” fast food restaurants left that serve decent food. Cook Out is probably the lone survivor in this category. Their food tastes like food and is reasonably priced for those on a budget. As the name states, good ol’ “cook out” style burgers, fries, BBQ and chicken. Not fancy but you get way better than average fast food. I am a fan of the cheddar chicken melt and the minced BBQ sandwich with hot sauce and slaw. They have real ice tea (both sweet and unsweetened) and milk shakes are available in many varieties. But be aware the shakes are very thick and it’s a challenge to get anything through the straw until they begin to melt a little. The interior space is plentiful and the staff at the Mechanicsville location are friendly and helpful.

First I have to say the staff was very polite and helpful. And this is a pretty clean location with an indoor seating area. Main reason for the three stars was that the food just wasn’t that good. We actually had brought our animal over to the local vet that was next door and while we were waiting my wife and I stopped over here to grab lunch. I got a junior tray with two corn dogs onion rings and hush puppies. The corn dogs were very soft like they had been sitting for quite a while the onion rings were a little chewy and had no taste, the only bright spot in my mail where the hush puppies. My wife got a plain hot dog cheese bites and French fries. The hot dog look like it came out of the Seinfeld episode where it had been cooking in a theater hot dog rotisserie for years. She said it was a little tough to buy into. I feel like they just have so many options that they just can’t be great with everything. I know they’re hamburgers are usually really good but today was a huge disappointment in the food.

The parking lot of the Cook Out in Mechanicsville is regularly taken over by crowds of people who park and stand around in the parking lot with tricked out vehicles absolutely blaring over the top stereos. As they exit, they pull out onto the road at extremely high rates of speed. I have even witnessed one drag race. I’m waiting for a bad crash to occur. It’s a terrible atmosphere about which I’ve spoken to the restaurant which has acknowledged it is a problem. I know others have complained as well. I assume management is making a conscientious decision to allow this because they think it increases revenue. But I’m not sure they understand how many customers they are losing as a result. Trying to enter the parking lot is like running a gauntlet. I wonder if Cook Out corporate is aware and approves of this activity and atmosphere. Is this what the Cook Out brand wants to be associated with? Although I have seen police pull over some of the vehicles after they speed out of the lot, I don’t see nearly enough police addressing the situation. In any event, after being tailgated by one of the vehicles absolutely blaring its music on the street in front of this Cook Out, I have stopped patronizing this Cook Out and generally will avoid shopping in the area. It’s not a good look for Mechanicsville and Cook Out is apparently doing nothing to stop it.

Went late at night. Typical cook out food and it was fine.
The wait to order at the drive thru was longer then normal though. May need a few more people working at night.

We had never been here before, but we gave it a whirl. The dining area was very clean. The service was very nice. Logan was our server, and was polite and smiled. We asked about their food and he took time to help us with it. The manager also was very nice when we asked go talk to him. To his surprise, we took time to tell him we enjoyed the place. He made sure we got our employee’s name so we could mention in the review. We did not buy the shakes, but if I could have eaten and drank that much, I would have. The price was also very good.

If you are overwhelmed or behind on orders, proper etiquette is to let your customer who is waiting at the order intercom know that it’s going to be a few minutes before you can take their order, rather than leaving a customer sitting and sitting wondering if something is wrong with the intercom. And, being polite to your customer via the intercom is always helpful rather than being rude and cutting the customer off with an attitude. You guys need to work on your customer service skills, they’re terrible. At least the cashier was nice.

This chain beats McDs hands down! On a road trip, I fed our family of 8 (with 6 young children) for less than $35, including milkshakes. Ample parking. Clean facilities, inside and out. Tasty food. Friendly service. Unique and comfortable ambiance.

Great store, Neat and the Service is very admirable for a fast food. The associate was kind enough to explain the ordering process as this was my first time here.

Upon skipping my pickup number due to distracted time on my cellphone I wasn’t aware of my order made ready. He courteously walked up to my table to offer me my food before it went cold. That was nice. I love their trays. They are awesome for the price of $5

A picture is worth a thousand words so check those pics out. The food was simply awful. We ended up just throwing it away. Wasted money! Barely any fries and what was there was soggy and half cooked. The chicken wrap literally had one small piece of lettuce (which was limp and probably shouldn’t have been used based on how it looked). Simply a terrible experience. It’s a shame that you can’t give a place a zero star because that’s what they earned last night.
