Contramar is one of those iconic Mexico City restaurants that truly lives up to the hype. It’s been around for many years, and the quality has never changed consistently excellent.

If you’re visiting Mexico City, this place is a must. Reservations can be a bit hard to get, so plan ahead it’s absolutely worth it.

The pescado a la talla is outstanding, served with both adobo sauce and their house sauce, accompanied by black corn tortillas and beans. Everything we tried was spectacular: tuna tostadas, shrimp tostadas, aguachiles, and ceviches all incredibly fresh and flavorful.

Save room for dessert. The fig tart, flan, and the meringue with strawberries and cream were all delicious and memorable.

They also offer a great cocktail selection with mezcal and tequila, plus beers and more. The service is excellent, and the vibe is unbeatable lively, warm, and truly enjoyable.

This is one of my favorite spots in the city. I had an amazing time, and I will definitely be back. Highly recommended.

One word to describe this experience: disappointing.

As a preface, the service was outstanding. Our waiter, Ramon, was very kind and attentive, as was the manager. Beyond that, everything was shockingly mid!

To start, we had the tuna and shrimp tostadas, which were quite good. As our main course, we had the pescado a la talla estilo contramar, which I was very excited about. The presentation was beautiful, and the waiter showing us how to serve the fish was a nice touch.

HOWEVER, upon trying the food, we found that the fish was lukewarm and shockingly flavorless. Given Contramar’s popularity and how highly regarded it is, I was expecting an explosion of flavor. The level of blandness was mind boggling. I swear they didn’t put even a pinch of salt on the fish.

I said something because it was shockingly bad. Thankfully, they brought another one out which I thought was better, albeit nothing that makes my mouth water thinking about it now.

So me and my boyfriend were really holding out hope for the dessert. We’re long distance (DC to CDMX) so every dinner we have together matters more, and I was really praying that the dinner would end on a high note. Unfortunately, they were OUT of the strawberry merengue. I will admit I was so disappointed that a few tears were shed. We ended up getting the fig tart that I liked but my boyfriend didn’t. At least we bonded on the walk home—30 minutes of complaining!

I would advise anyone reading this to pass on contramar unless you want to pay thousands of pesos to be disappointed.

We had the most beautiful dinner at Contramar. The service was impeccable! The tuna tostadas, battered shrimp tacos, and the strawberry meringue pie was delicious. All of the food was so fresh and so flavorful. One of the best meals I’ve ever had!

We had a truly fabulous time here – it’s a BOUJI, vibey spot for lunch that still delivers on all the flavours. Antonio, our server, really made the experience but giving us all the recommendations to suit us and being on point for the wine refills! We couldn’t get a reservation so we walked in at lunchtime opening and got a seat outside easy breezy – probs could walk in at any point before 1pm and get a spot! We had the tuna tostada which I felt was a great sized portion for the price and tasted delish. We had the special ceviche colima which was super interesting and yummy. And then we had the octopus and the cactus salad and the fish carnita – all perfectly flavoured and cooked – loved it! The Mexican Sauvignon was the perfect pair – so glad we made it!

We had a phenomenal time. It was world class. We didnt have a reservation but dont let that put you off- put your name down, grab a drink somewhere nearby- it’s totally worth the wait .

Julio our waiter couldn’t have taken better care of us and we felt right at home. Personal highlight for me was the tuna tostada…mind blowingly delicious- they serve it with delicious salsa and marinated onions … best single bite of my trip to Mexico. Hope to squeeze in another trip before our flight back in a few days. Thanks again to Julio and the whole team- it was MAGIC!!

I went to Contramar with high expectations given its worldwide reputation and how hard it is to get a reservation. The place is lively and clearly very popular, but unfortunately the food did not live up to the hype for me.

The seafood was heavily covered with sauces, which, as a Greek who appreciates the natural flavor of fresh fish, felt like it masked rather than enhanced the quality of the ingredients. What was most disappointing, however, is that I ended up with food poisoning after the meal.

Overall, while the atmosphere is vibrant and the restaurant is famous for a reason, my personal experience was underwhelming and left me disappointed.

If you’re a solo diner, one thing to do is ask if you can have half-portion sizes as their full sizes are huge!
For my ceviche & tuna tostadas, I had half-sizes pictured but because I was told they couldn’t do half size for the grilled fish, I thought they’ll be unable to do so for my tuna steak (as you can see it came in two portions). No complaints though.
Also, they never seem to have availability on open table but you can WhatsApp them for a reservation or show up as soon as they open to be seated or to get a reservation for a few hours later.

Incredible tuna tostadas and broccolini tostadas! I had oysters for the first time and they were easy to eat paired with a delicious sauce. We went on a Monday right at noon and they were able to seat us without a reservation or being on a waitlist. This place is busy and loud which I wasn’t a huge fan of.

This is a real turn and burn type of place. They know how to get you in and out as fast as possible so it wouldn’t be suitable for a relaxing date night or slow evening. The coconut flan was the best thing we had. Their dishes arrive so fast to your table you have to wonder if everything is pre cooked on stand by and just flashed in the oven when you order. That said their food is decent.

We had an incredible meal at Contramar today — truly one of those long, lazy Mexico City lunches that feels like a full experience. We ordered the holy trinity: the tostadas de atún, the pulpo a la gallega, and the pescado a la talla, and every single dish delivered.

The tuna tostadas were bright, crisp, and silky — the kind of bite that makes you stop talking for a second. The pulpo was beautifully tender and smoky. And the pescado a la talla (we did 700g on our server’s recommendation) was the star: perfectly grilled, half red and half green, with enough depth and acidity to keep you chasing every last piece.

The energy here is exactly what you want in Roma Norte — vibrant, buzzy, and effortlessly stylish. Perfect for sharing everything and lingering over food and conversation. Highly recommend.
