Here’s what I ordered, straight from the receipt, with exact pricing:
Ginger Ale: $7.00
Salmon & Farro: $32.00
I chose this after seeing someone else with it. It arrived with asparagus, which I don’t like, so I pulled the asparagus off. Otherwise it was delicious, balanced flavors, hearty, and felt like a special dish, not just a standard entree.
Chocolate Cheese Cake: $15.00
Very rich and decadent; tasted even better than it looks in the photo. A great way to end the meal.
Sun–Thurs music fee of $10.00
This is a charge they add during live music hours officially listed on their site. For live jazz Sun–Thurs it’s $10 per person, and higher on Fri/Sat; there’s also a lower bar/lounge charge.
Total on the receipt: $67.78 before cash discount shown.
Food quality and creativity. The Salmon & Farro was flavorful and plated nicely, and the chocolate cheesecake was top‑tier. It’s clear the menu has evolved since my last visit over a year ago, good to see freshness in both dishes and overall concept. Live music is genuinely central. Tony Campbell’s set added real energy. The space is intimate, so the music feels immediate, not background noise.
Small space, strong turnover. Because the restaurant is compact, once you’ve eaten it’s basically fair to give your table to whoever is waiting. If you want to linger, pace yourself, maybe stretch it to an hour; otherwise you’ll be nudged to move along.
Bar/lounge is tiny, first‑come first‑served. If the dining area is full, you might try to hang in the lounge, but it’s small and still subject to the music charge.
Parking challenge, but a workable hack. Street parking near impossible. Nearby garages are pricier, but there’s a cheaper option in the Golden Triangle. The Fort Duquesne & Sixth Parking garage stays at $10 regardless of events, which is unusually consistent and less costly than others in the area. Handy tip if you’re trying to keep the evening affordable.
If you have strong dislikes like to asparagus. Ask for a small tweak or plan to remove it. The dish was still great after I did.
When it’s busy, expect to enjoy maybe one set rather than the whole night, unless you’re slow or grab a spot in the lounge.
Bring cash or card; they’ll add the live music fee, but it’s clearly spelled out on their site and felt worth it given the quality of the performers and food.
Overall, Con Alma is a unique, intimate jazz dinner spot with creative Latin‑influenced food. It can be tight on space and parking, but the music, food, and vibe make it a place I’d happily visit again.
In my pursuit for Pittsburgh restaurants with impressive atmospheres, Con Alma soulfully delivers. When you walk in, you’re greeted with a bar to your left, and an intimate dining room positioned against a stage for live music. Dimly lit with neon accent lights, the space transports you to an urban utopia that simply put, is enchanting. I felt no longer in Pittsburgh, rather in a dream.
The menu is concise, refined, and inventive. Con Alma is a fusion of Latin American, and Caribbean cuisine, complimentary with Jazz music. We ordered ROPA VIEJA, a braised short rib dish paired with rice and beans, along with the LOMO SALTADO, a Peruvian beef stir fry. Both dishes offer complex flavors that leave you inspired. Each dish had a flavor profile that was delicate and seemed to evolve with each bite. The portions were dare I say, too much? The LOMO SALTADO seemed bottomless. We eagerly asked for a doggie bag.
The service was spectacular. Charismatic, charming, and attentive staff effortless blended into the experience. The service enhanced the experience and made you feel like a priority. After ordering, it was no longer than 10 minutes and we were eating.
A few things to keep in mind, during live music there is a ten-dollar charge per guest. Con Alma is not just a bar, restaurant, or music venue, it is a combination of the three which is truly an experience, and worth the fee. The menu could be on the pricier side, however, keep in mind the portion sizes along with the atmosphere make this not just a restaurant, but a valuable experience.
I look forward to returning with guests to impress. Con Alma is a place your friends, family, and special someone will never forget.
Now, for the unfortunate downside— the entrees. If you read other reviews, you will notice a trend. The entrees simply are not that good. Overpriced, overcooked, under seasoned, odd flavor profiles, unbalanced. We got the short rib with plantains and rice/beans. It was literally plain white rice, burnt beans, and then everything was covered in tomato sauce— it tasted like chili but was supposed to be Caribbean? Also ordered the coconut seabass and it was fried so hard that I couldn’t even cut it with my knife. Once I was able to break through, it tasted like burnt nothingness.
I would eat elsewhere and come back to enjoy music and drinks only. I hope they consider perfecting their culinary techniques and menu so that the food can be less hit or miss.
They were out of snapper and another item, which we only found out when placing our orders, rather than at the very beginning. Other than that, the service was good.
