To start, we sat for 30 minutes without a single staff member checking on us. We eventually had to get up and ask if we even had a server. When someone finally arrived, there was no explanation of how the afternoon tea service worked—no overview, no process, nothing. We waited even longer before tea was served, and there was no tea menu. Instead, someone simply walked around with a box of loose teas and told us to pick one, without any descriptions.
The food was especially disappointing.
• Gluten-free: The sandwiches were decent, but the desserts were incredibly dry, and the two cookies were so stale they crumbled like dust.
• Vegetarian: One of the sandwiches was literally tofu with a single slice of tomato.
• Regular items: Multiple people said the scones were hard as a rock, and overall the food lacked flavor, freshness, and care.
For a $95 per person experience (including tax and gratuity), the quality and service were nowhere near acceptable. We spoke with the manager and received 10% off, but given the overall experience, we would not return.
Worst tea experience I’ve ever had. I have been to many high-end teas (Peninsula, Allis, Russian Tea Room, etc.) in addition to local small teas. So you can trust me when I say – do NOT waste your money.
The room was packed and boiling lava hot. I was getting slammed by the chair behind me throughout. It was so loud I couldn’t hear the person next to me let alone the servers, who, by the way, were nowhere to be found.
I was given the wrong tea, which took 45 minutes to remedy, the plates were plopped down with no explanation or care, and, when finished, it took 40 minutes and five different requests to servers passing by to get the check.
The sandwiches were pretty much inedible and the pastries tasted like they had picked them up at the Walmart bakery. Pure sugar and zero finesse. It was a beautiful-looking, gross array of items.
I cannot believe we had to spend so much money on what was not just disappointing but an actively uncomfortable experience. I went home and ate kraft Mac N Cheese with my seven year old daughter who had accompanied me and we were both far more satisfied than with anything we’d previously eaten.
The Food:
The starters were genuinely enjoyable—the bread, gnocchi soup, and salmon tostada hit the spot and set high hopes. Service was on the slower side (Valentine’s day, I get it), but when the surf and turf finally arrived, things took a turn. The lobster tail carried a noticeable fishy aroma from the shell that lingered and made the rest of the meal feel a bit off. The braised short rib had some tender moments but was mostly on the dry side. Dessert—a pistachio ice cream and chocolate mousse bomb—was pleasant enough but nothing memorable. For the price point of $100+ of our hard earned money per person, the Valentine’s set menu felt like “Disney World pricing” without providing any”Disney magic moments.”
The Atmosphere:
This spot works alright for breakfast, but the dinner setup felt a little awkward. It’s positioned between a bar area across the hall on one side and a large party room on the other, with glass doors that didn’t quite contain the energy next door.
The hotel/event team had booked a lively group into the adjacent party space, complete with a full live jazz band (sax, bass, drums, keyboard, vocalist—the works). The music was upbeat and probably fun on its own … but it was competing with a pianist near the bar playing Valentine’s classics (with some CD backup) and the restaurant’s own background tracks. The result? A lively soundscape that leaned more toward “confusion” than “intimate dinner for two.”
To top it off, a faint whiff of cigarette smoke drifted in from somewhere nearby (bar? party room? hard to tell). It wasn’t overpowering, but it added one more layer to the evening’s unintended chaos.
A couple of nearby tables quietly flagged down the manager to voice complaints, so it wasn’t just us. A complimentary round of something bubbly for all might have smoothed things over, but instead we had an automatic 20% unfelt gratuity added to our bill. What could have steered the misfortunes of tonight towards comedy, by use of skillful hospitality and copious alcohol, instead ended in this tragic Google review.
Overall—the company and conversation piece caused by all the spectacle made the experience bearable —but romance was drowned out by the noise, smells, and food hiccups. We’ll probably try to avoid in the future.
Atmosphere: 5. Lovely fireplace seating. Decor and warmth of room was very nice
Presentation: 4. Table was a bit crowded for the # of things on it
Explanation: 1. This fell short. There were five jams/compotes on the table. No explanation of what each was. No description or summary of tea sandwiches when served, nor of the type of scones, bread and deserts. When asked, was hurriedly told what they thought it was. Huge missed opportunity to sell high tea.
Food: 3. the bread on the sandwiches was dry on the top, which means they are sitting out in the kitchen. Tea was good quality loose tea but limited choices. Only one black tea out of nine total. However they do replenish the dishes which is a nice touch
Service: 3.5. kind, nice but not knowledgeable about high tea. Requests for refills were promptly taken care of, I just wish we would have had more explanation about what they served.
The staff and room made it nice experience overall but will not return for high tea.
