I tried this French-inspired restaurant in downtown Saint Pete for the first time last night and unfortunately walked away a bit underwhelmed. The space itself is beautifully decorated and has a really charming atmosphere. The outdoor seating was especially nice and made for a great setting on a cool evening.

We started with the salmon tartare, which was excellent — fresh, well-balanced, and easily the highlight of the meal.

For the main course, I ordered the ribeye steak and was disappointed. It was tougher than expected and lacked the rich flavor you’d anticipate at this price point. My friend ordered the same steak, medium, but it came out extremely rare. He cut it into several small pieces to check the doneness throughout, and when he sent it back, the kitchen simply refired the same steak — including all the small cut pieces. When it returned, the smaller pieces were overcooked and burnt, while the main portion was heavily seared on the outside and still pinkish inside. At this caliber of restaurant and pricing, we felt the steak should have been replaced rather than re-cooked.

That said, the service was good. Our server was attentive and professional throughout the meal.

Overall, it wasn’t a terrible experience, but for a French-inspired restaurant at this price level, we expected better execution on the main course.

COGNOC is an absolute gem. We celebrated our 11th anniversary here and had an unforgettable experience. The staff were warm, attentive, and made us feel truly special from start to finish. We were even surprised with complimentary champagne, which made the evening feel extra memorable.

The food was exceptional and beautifully prepared. We tried the seafood trio grill board, escargot, lamb chops, mussels, steak and fries, and finished with a decadent chocolate mousse. Every dish was delicious, fresh, and perfectly balanced. The lamb chops were tender and flavorful, the seafood grill was elegant and fresh, and the mussels were cooked in a fantastic broth that paired perfectly with the warm bread. The steak frites were cooked perfectly and seasoned well, and the chocolate mousse was rich, silky, and the perfect ending to an amazing meal.

The atmosphere is elegant, cozy, and festive, with beautiful lighting and décor that creates a romantic and welcoming ambiance. It’s the perfect place for special occasions or a memorable night out.

COGNOC exceeded all expectations in food, service, and atmosphere. We will absolutely be returning and highly recommend it! Merci beaucoup!

Another absolutely wonderful meal at Cognac. We came for the Valentine’s Day event, and opted for the wine pairing as well. Service was really good/ everybody from the hostess, to the wait staff, runners and manager were all smiling and hospitable. They were slammed, but still took the time to ensure our evening was special, and that is great.

The food was spot on and worth it every time. Might be time to update the cocktail selection as it isn’t on the same level as the rest, but the wine pairings were well matched.

Highly recommend visiting.

We brought our weekly Thursday night Entrepreneur Social Club group for dinner to Cognac last night, and we enjoyed a fabulous experience from the start to finish! Friendly prompt service, delicious, french food and of course, wine and desserts! Merci Team Cognac! Ipersonally enjoyed the fillet mignon, green salad, creamy cheesy potatoes, palm frits, and lots of wine from Bordeaux!

Honestly, this may have been the best meal I’ve ever had. This place never disappoints! We were celebrating, so splurged a little bit. We got escargot, warm goat cheese salad, tomahawk for two with creamy potatoes au gratin & asparagus, crème brûlée, and chocolate mousse.

This was our first time there, a spontaneous visit. We liked everything about the food. However, the service was very slow, but perhaps that’s because of the holidays. They did give us a complimentary dessert, though. The food was delicious. The steak was very tasty. The fish was a bit too salty for me, but I eat very little salt, so maybe that’s why.

Cognac brings a nice touch of French café charm to downtown, with a relaxed atmosphere that’s great for a slow morning or an unhurried brunch. The menu has a thoughtful European-inspired feel, and while not everything blew me away, the dishes were enjoyable and well-prepared.

The Benedict was solid — the poached eggs and smoked salmon paired nicely, and the hollandaise had a smooth, mellow flavor. The French toast was lightly sweet and worked well with the fresh berries and whipped cream. Nothing overly fancy, but definitely satisfying.

Cognac is a pleasant addition to the downtown brunch scene. Not a showstopper, but a nice place to sit, sip your coffee, and ease into the day.
