We started with the salmon tartare, which was excellent — fresh, well-balanced, and easily the highlight of the meal.
For the main course, I ordered the ribeye steak and was disappointed. It was tougher than expected and lacked the rich flavor you’d anticipate at this price point. My friend ordered the same steak, medium, but it came out extremely rare. He cut it into several small pieces to check the doneness throughout, and when he sent it back, the kitchen simply refired the same steak — including all the small cut pieces. When it returned, the smaller pieces were overcooked and burnt, while the main portion was heavily seared on the outside and still pinkish inside. At this caliber of restaurant and pricing, we felt the steak should have been replaced rather than re-cooked.
That said, the service was good. Our server was attentive and professional throughout the meal.
Overall, it wasn’t a terrible experience, but for a French-inspired restaurant at this price level, we expected better execution on the main course.
The food was exceptional and beautifully prepared. We tried the seafood trio grill board, escargot, lamb chops, mussels, steak and fries, and finished with a decadent chocolate mousse. Every dish was delicious, fresh, and perfectly balanced. The lamb chops were tender and flavorful, the seafood grill was elegant and fresh, and the mussels were cooked in a fantastic broth that paired perfectly with the warm bread. The steak frites were cooked perfectly and seasoned well, and the chocolate mousse was rich, silky, and the perfect ending to an amazing meal.
The atmosphere is elegant, cozy, and festive, with beautiful lighting and décor that creates a romantic and welcoming ambiance. It’s the perfect place for special occasions or a memorable night out.
COGNOC exceeded all expectations in food, service, and atmosphere. We will absolutely be returning and highly recommend it! Merci beaucoup!
The food was spot on and worth it every time. Might be time to update the cocktail selection as it isn’t on the same level as the rest, but the wine pairings were well matched.
Highly recommend visiting.
The Benedict was solid — the poached eggs and smoked salmon paired nicely, and the hollandaise had a smooth, mellow flavor. The French toast was lightly sweet and worked well with the fresh berries and whipped cream. Nothing overly fancy, but definitely satisfying.
Cognac is a pleasant addition to the downtown brunch scene. Not a showstopper, but a nice place to sit, sip your coffee, and ease into the day.
Had the chèvre chaud salad and cheese omelette. I’ll be back when in Tampa again.
