Avant Lard Travel – by Houston Porter
We finally got a chance to dine here after our friend reminded us about it.

(This is the San Salvadorian pupusa place at the corner of Bodega and Eastman, where Butcher Crown once was.)

We had a great time sitting out back in their redesigned patio, trying 6 of the 7 pupusas, plus 2 tacos, chips and salsa, and some warm weather drinks.

Pupusas aren’t generally photogenic but they sure did taste good, especially once our friend guided us on how to open them up and add the sauce and the curtido, which is the spicy/pickled slaw (theirs is great.)

Although we were instructed which two pupusas were on which plates, we confused ourselves a bit and so it was a bit of a guessing game but in the end we each had a couple favorites.

And the tacos were both excellent. We had the shrimp and the chorizo and this might be my new favorite chorizo in town. They grill it up perfectly with some crispy edges.

Oh, and I can’t forget the chips. They were thick fried tortillas and were excellent!

For drinks we had two “fresh water” drinks, which are a slightly sugary juice water and a Fomosa beer, which is San Salvadorian and is one of the better American lagers I’ve had. And after the long walk, the line and salt was a perfect addition.

Cocina Antigua is open for breakfast so we look forward to going back to try that, plus another lunch or dinner in order to try their main entrees.

Overall, this was a very pleasant way to spend a Sunday lunch and we’ll definitely be back.

The service , chips and salsa, beans and rice were really good! The only suggestion is to fine tune the pupusas. They were a bit mushy, too soft. Maybe too much water in the filling or masa, other than that it’s nice place to have a meal.

SO delicious! We loved the fish and the pupusas – we got beef and cheese. Rice and beans were also delicious!

This is the second time I have eaten here and both times the food was outstanding. Very friendly staff and the food is worth writing a review for. (Something I rarely do)

If you get a chance to stop by and eat here, you will not regret doing so!!!

Can’t wait to try more of the menu. Pupusas came out quick and were delicious. Churrasco Chapin was amazing as well! So happy to have a Guatemalan restaurant in Petaluma!

Their pupusas are authentic just like the Mission in SF. Everything from the rice & beans to the curtido & salsa is amazing. We order takeout often and it’s always easy to order over the phone. They have a parking lot for easy parking and an adorable outdoor patio to eat in the back. You will not be disappointed if you try them out!

We had the pupusas and loved the ratio of Tortilla to stuffing. Had the mixed pupusas and asked for extra curtido which they gave me for me 3 pupusas. I will come again for the pupusas

Delicious purposes but maybe a little on the small side. Clean comfortable dining room. Friendly fast service. A bit off the beaten path but worth the trip

I had lunch recently and although the dish was different than expected tasted ok. I paid with credit card. Later I noticed I couldn’t find my credit card and called the restaurant. The person who answered didn’t speak English. I asked for someone who could help, no reply, she hung up on me. I called back and kept saying hello, hello. No response. I would have recommended this restaurant for nothing other than a change. Now, I will never go back and when asked would never recommend due to the treatment of me during my phone call.
