This was my first time at this establishment. The food was ok; however, I ordered a burrito with no beans..my burrito had beans which threw off the taste. I am NOT a fan of refried beans on my burrito or any food I choose.
The drink I had was delicious… lemonade..wished it was in a larger size.
My son & his wife enjoyed their food & drinks that they ordered.

A Glimpse into Guatemalan Cuisine

We were in Novato looking for a place to eat and stumbled upon Cocina Antigua online. This restaurant specializes in Guatemalan cuisine, and we were eager to try it.

Located in the Nave Shopping Center Annex, the restaurant was filled with a young crowd when we arrived. The dining area, though small, was clean and well-organized. A friendly hostess greeted and seated us. She patiently explained the dishes, highlighted the day’s specials, and even offered to prepare a couple of Guatemalan dishes we were interested in, even though they weren’t on the menu.

We opted for a selection of small plates to sample various dishes. The dishes arrived, a couple with a vibrant display of colors and textures. While the presentation was inviting, the overall flavor profile lacked the punch I expected in Guatemalan food. It leaned more towards bland, leaving me wanting more complexity or heat. However, the Pork Pupusas and Plantanos stood out for their flavor and texture.

Update:

Still delicious! And omg hit all the spots
This time we tried the fried fish and the beef fajitas.

The fish as nice and crispy and flavorful

The fajitas were cooked well and in a yummy sauce

This place was pretty hot inside, so we were relieved to eat in their outdoor seating

You would miss this gem if you weren’t looking for it. Glad we found this place!

The pupusa was so yummy and fresh with the perfect amount of salad and salsa
The chicken quesadilla was huge! And so filling
The horchata was nice and flavorful
The passion fruit drink was also delicious with the little crunchy bits

While we waited for our food we explored their shop and got some goodies

Excited to go back and try more things!

the sopa de pollo was tasteless.i tried adding salt and pepper it didn’t help. i added the rice to it but it was bad. i tried to add the chicken that was served but it must have been an old piece of chicken. I could not take the skin off it. it was not even warm. i left it there and paid for it anyway. I went to the restaurant for the soup. They asked me how was it? I said it was bad and told the i could not eat it. I paid $24:00 No tip. They didn’t care they just wanted the money. Hope you have better luck than i did. i drove 40 miles just to eat there. Good thing there was other restaurant there so i ate lunch at Mcdanolds.

Ordered #13 Plate Antigua for $26.99. The plate has steak, shrimp, chicken, longaiza, beans, rice, avocado, and salsa. Got 3 pieces of tortillas, 3 pieces of shrimp, 1 longaiza, a thin slice of chicken, and a big slice of bistek/steak. Everything tasted really good. The shrimp, chicken, and beans were flavorful. My husband and I shared this meal, and we ended up ordering extra tortillas. My son ordered Al Pastor, and he said it was really good.

If you’re looking for pretty decent quality food with good taste, this is the place. Had a fish steak with a drink for dinner that was good and left satisfied. Service is excellent.

Decent place. Waiter was moody, during lunch time waiter was overwhelmed, did not bring drinks until after food was served. Coffee was the last thing it arrived in a dirty cup. My huvos ranchers were so so, they came with chiken seasoning powder on top of the eggs. (Not how I would seasoning my breakfast) it was just overpriced for the food and service. If you like church music that is your place!.

My son in law told me about this Cocina after I told him I was going to another place to pick up a burrito for lunch and I’m glad he did! It was truly authentic, Central American cuisine (not that I really know what that is, but it didn’t taste like your standard Mexican fare). I had the chicken burrito and like everything you might think that goes into a burrito, this had it but, believe, the taste is amazing! I took my lunch on a hike up to Olomapli State Park – figured I needed to earn the feast…about a mile and a half, I stopped for lunch and the whole experience was fabulous! Could only eat 1/2 so tomorrow, another feast! I highly recommend!
