We’re celebrating 85 continuous years in business, of serving comfort food to Houston.
Today, Cleburne Cafeteria is run very much the way it was back in 1941.
We take pride in offering the very best quality and the widest possible variety. The Mickelis family believes in a welcoming, comfortable environment and simple homemade food.
Local spot for hefty portions of American classics served cafeteria-style in a no-frills setting.

First visit on a visit home to Houston. I had never heard of this place until living out of state. This is a really nice Cafeteria. It reminds us of the Wyatt’s Cafeteria we had growing up in Pasadena. The building itself is really nice and you enter into a nice spacious lobby with a history timeline of the restaurant on one wall and paintings by one of the longtime owners around the other walls. You begin your journey by choosing whether or not you would like a salad before choosing your entree. Tonight we chose one of the daily specials, Beef Stroganoff ($14.95) which was really tasty. We also chose the Chicken Fried Steak with White Cream Gravy ($13.95). We ordered more sides than we needed so we had lots to take home. We ordered Macaroni & Cheese ($4.25), Squash Casserole ($4.45) , Bowl of Fruit ($4.45), Deviled Eggs ($3.95), Greek Salad($4.25), Bowl of Vegetable Soup ($5.99), slice of Apple Pie ($5.45), Slice of Strawberry Cream Cake ($6.45), dinner roll ($1.15). They had staff members walking around refilling drinks and checking on us throughout our meal.
All of the staff members looked professional and polished and were very helpful. This was an excellent experience all around. The restrooms were very clean and fresh too. While we ordered much too much food due to our excitement over how amazing everything looked, smelled and tasted…we had plenty to bring home to eat again over the next couple of days. This is a restaurant that we recommend and will be excited to experience again on our future visits. There is nothing that I would not order again!

12/2/2025: I like cafeterias. I was raised on them with my grandparents, so they hold a special memory for my taste buds. Cleburne definitely has great service and large portions, but I wasn’t crazy about the food. My fish, casserole, mushrooms, and tea were $25.89! Yes, the portions are large, but they were so large I could not finish them and I had plans after, so I could not take my leftovers. I wouldn’t have anyway because they would heat well. So, for my money side, I was not impressed. The fish is not even close to being as good as Luby’s, the casserole was made with fresh green beans, so it was a little firm, and the mushroom were a little lacking in flavor. They don’t have a lot of options like other cafeterias. It was very basic on the sides options. They have okra, but it is not fried okra. I wasn’t impressed, so I am giving them 3 stars.

On today’s review lunch menu- Cleburne Cafeteria. I was in need of a mid-day meal and since I was in the area I stopped by. The building itself was gorgeous, new, and the Christmas tree is stunning! (very festive) I wish I felt that giddy about their food. The line ran quickly and everyone behind the counter had a “rush” mentality. I was appalled by their $4.95 for ONE devil egg!!! The portions are of generous size but the taste is extremely bland and mediocre. I was not impressed with spending (almost 40$) for “at best” a $15 meal. My time at the table was met with zero waitstaff as well. I will not recommend a try but I’ll leave that to you. Happy Eating ️

Homely and hearty food.
Service and atmosphere:
The service was outstanding. Everyone was very friendly and super helpful. The staff was offering to carry food to the table.
The restaurant is big, clean and well organised.
Food and drinks:
The food was very tasty and delicious. They offer home made style dishes with great variety of meats, vegetables, salads and desserts.
I had turkey. The meat was very succulent and well cooked. I would recommend salad with cheek peas and feta cheese.
You can opt for alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages.
Pricing:
$$ – super worth it!

First time visit and my family member and I went for lunch. There isn’t anything I did not like. I love that we found parking. I loved the atmosphere. I love that you get to see and choose what you would like to eat and I loved all the different varieties of entrees and sides. It is a little pricey, but I think it is worth it. So many different types of cake desserts. Staff is so kind and helpful. Food is delicious and my family and I will definitely be back soon.

It’s a cafeteria. It’s been around since 1941 so they’re doing something right. We went on a Sunday afternoon, busy with the church folks. Long line but I was amazed how fast the service was. This was my first visit and I’m sure I will return. Our choice entres were delicious, fresh, hot and generous portions. Dining area was clean, they had plenty of staff checking on us, keeping the tables cleaned as the vast amount of customers ate and left. They have a drive thru which I think is a great idea. Parking was wild but plenty of it even on a busy Sunday late lunch.

The food here is excellent! Tastes like it’s straight out of your grandmother’s kitchen! The food is served cafeteria style like Luby’s. The turkey was very moist & the dressing and gravy was delicious as well! The desserts here are out of this world! The blueberry dream cake was very light & fluffy & not overly sweet, the blueberries were huge! I will keep coming here over & over again for years to come!

I’ve been wanting to Cleburne for a while now. We finally went & weren’t disappointed. The whole vise if like a fantasy Lubys, but the food is 10 times better. The fried fish was excellent. The fish itself was very light & flaky. The batter was thick & crispy. My sons hamburger steak was a show stealer. So much flavor. The sides.. The mashed potatoes were excellent bringing back memories of Grandma and her homemade mashed potatoes. Green beans were good. Macaroni also very good. my son got some sauteed spinach which was just incredible if you love spinach, it’s a must try. As for dessert, you best save room for dessert. I got a pecan pie and it was one of the best pecan pies I’ve tasted in a long time. Also tried a piece of my son’s German chocolate cake. The cake itself was very moist. It was Excellent! All in all I would say The whole experience was excellent and it would definitely go back. The sheer quality of the food is excellent. You can tell everything is fresh and tastes like homemade. As for the value of the food. well it was a family of four and my oldest son and my wife got three sides instead of two. Wow! Me and my youngest son got two desserts instead of one. Just cuz we wanted to try everything. it all looks so good. With all that food we came out just under $120 for the meal. Plus tip. And just to show the value of the food, all four of us can go to Applebee’s and just about spend the same amount. But for less quality and amount of food.

My dad’s friend suggested we go here since we were going to Houston. So we tried it out. If you’re not familiar with Houston’s highways I would strongly suggest taking the street route. Lovely building/atmosphere. Food-meh. It was cold..all of it. We all had the fish, green beans, rolls. What did stand out was the cakes! I had the strawberry or pink cake-dangerously delicious! Their portions are huge and yes each side is an additional charge. For the 3 of us it was roughly $80. Luby’s is better. Sorry, not sorry.
