This place had the BEST STEAK I’ve ever had at a restaurant! I was also part of a large group and the server was nothing short of spectacular when handling all of us. We would have loved to eat outside if it hadn’t been raining because the patio looked so inviting!
At this point, I’m nitpicking because it was great, but the menu is very limited in my opinion. I think they change it regularly so I understand keeping it small but it was still limited to high end meats and fish. I didn’t see any vegan options and 1 vegetarian entree option (if that vegetarian eats fish) so just a heads up.
I’d definitely go back!

Great gastropub in the north woods! Everyone loved their food, and the choice between 3 amazing old-fashions was a nice touch. They have a wide selection of choices at their bar and plenty of food to fill you up. Make sure to come early on the weekends, as it gets filled up by 6pm!

OH MY GOODNESS. Highly recommend this place, the service was fast, our server was FANTASTIC, and very helpful with any questions we had. The food was excellent, and the prices were justifiable for what you actually recieved. I definitely filled up on cheesecurds, which meant I had to take more of my entree home to eat for later, we also took dessert to go. The berry shortbread crumble is delicious! They do change their menu frequently, which I like because you always get to try something new! We will definitely be back. Thank you 1881 staff for the amazing night!

Best food in the northwoods. Varied menu with always a different option. Friendly and accommodating staff. New outdoor patio, bakery coming. Wagyu burger, scallop specials, Thai shrimp and much more. Great desserts.

Daily menus are on Facebook.

If you’ve not been there for Thanksgiving, you’re missing out. Absolutely the finest Thanksgiving dinner! Every side was perfection. And the prices very, very reasonable.

Wonderful pesto prawn gnocchi. Maple Brussels sprouts, sweet potato croquette, squash cakes all delicious. OMG The chocolate pecan coconut cake is one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. Menu does change frequently.

Third and fourth visits. Just excellent food. The Asian shrimp and scallops is both spicy and sweet. My wife’s halibut was cooked so perfectly it was the best I’ve ever eaten. It just melted. The triple berry crumble was huge. Two of us could not finish it.
I’ve had the steaks, walleye, burgers, desserts and everything is excellent. This is just a wonderful place with great staff, great food and great atmosphere. I would give it six stars if I could.

(FINAL THOUGHT BELOW)

We went here on a Monday evening, made a reservation for 6 people. We sat at the bar, ordered a few beers and creative cocktails. Had a Leinie Honey Weiss, Summer Weiss, Blackberry Old Fashioned, The 1881, and Big Stone Sour! I took a sip of each drink and all was pretty good! I definitely favored the Blackberry Old Fashioned and Big Stone Sour.

We tried a few dishes. These are huge dishes. Meatloaf sandwich. Tangy, Mouthwatering, and Uniquely Delicious. Taste great made fresh, but definitely not good when microwaved the next day. Bread got super tough to bite when reheated, should have airfryed to reheat. Greek Grinder was absolutely delicious. The tzatziki sauce made here is the signature ingredient for this dish. The Clayton’s Cheeseburger. Simple, aromatic, and love the lightly smoky char on the burger patty.

We did get the Lemon Cheesecake Ice Cream Sandwich and the Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Sandwich. Both are good! Definitely great for kids! For me, not something I would normally go for.

The bartender was great and friendly. Pretty attentive! Love her personality and bubbly-ness. Our waiter was a young man. Friendly and sweet. Wish he was a bit more attentive, but we also know the restaurant got super busy soon after we arrived. Met the owner and he was super welcoming!

Overall, will definitely visit again for the cocktails and meatloaf sandwich. I would love to try their “Soprano Sandwich” next time or the Aged Steak. It’s pretty pricey here but it comes in big quantity and quality food. Definitely give it a visit. Call first to see if you need a reservation.

A real gem in the north woods. The atmosphere is really nice. It’s open and airy. Lots of wood. Everyone is super friendly. I was told the staff is mostly family and the owner is cooking. (Also told a new chef is on the way.)
The bartenders were helpful and attentive. There are some special cocktails that are worth a try. You can eat at the bar if you like but the dining room is nice too. It’s a little small but not at all cramped. Big widows show off the really nice patio. Where you can also eat.
The food was great too. You may balk a little at the prices but the portions are healthy, the quality is awesome, and hey inflation. The menu changes daily. I had the last end cut of the prime rib. Perfectly cooked with delicious au jus. The wife had a shrimp and scallop pasta that was fantastic. Very nice side salad too. Not just lettuce on the plate. Desserts change too but we had an awesome cheesecake and took home a giant piece of carrot cake.
The service was great too. Evan was very helpful and friendly.
My only suggestion to the owners: It would be awesome if you made your own salad dressings. And cooking the onions and mushrooms side just a bit longer.
Claytons1881 is a great restaurant and I hope they stick around. The north woods needs you! I’ll be back.

Always a real treat for us to dine at Clayton’s. We travel up to the area several times a year from Minneapolis, MN and this is a must stop every trip. We have dined all over the US and food, drinks, and service at Clayton’s never disappoints. We enjoyed the growth of the business over time and look forward to using their new patio area. We had a wonderful dinner with friends on Saturday, Sept 24 and our Host made the evening enjoyable. My dinner of scallops and shrimp was made perfectly with a generous portion. One thing to note, their desserts are all homemade, very tasty, and huge! We split the Pineapple Upside Down Cake and Peach Cobbler for five people. I love restaurants that think outside the box on the standard desserts.

We came to celebrate my birthday on the assumption that it was fine dining. The prices are on the high end for the area regardless of food quality. The atmosphere was more of a “clubhouse” or casual restaurant. A $49 ribeye did not come with soup or salad and there is no bread with the meal. The more affordable fish fry was $25 and came with one piece of square shaped fish that was oily and watery all at once. It had a fishy taste and was mushy inside. The French fries were good but not fresh cut or anything special and again-no soup, salad or bread. The steak bites were good but some were well done and some were rare. Oddly, those were also $25 and came with fries but on the appetizer menu where one would not expect soup or salad. Finally, I ordered the cheesecake and my husband ordered the “pop tart”. The cheesecake was more of a light mousse that I guessed was Cool Whip, Jello mix, and cream cheese. Raspberries were mixed in and on top. It was huge and beautifully presented. Despite that, it was not worth $12 and I would not categorize it as cheesecake. The pop tart was a phyllo dough square with sickenly sweet filling and toppings. It was ok. The drink I ordered was a Long Island iced tea that didn’t resemble one. All in all, the entire dinner was a disappointment that was worsened by the high price. The outdoor seating area was lovely and the inside was modern with golfing decor.

A very classy place to have dinner. I went with a group and sat outside on the patio. The water feature is so relaxing! There were fresh flowers on our table too. Service was great with Evan! The food was delicious & there was plenty for leftovers. Can’t wait for their bakery to open!!

Very modern and clean building. Excellent service and exquisite menu. I did not post a picture of the menu as it changes with new dishes. Fresh and cleanly cooked meals. Worth another visit!
