You know when you see these travel videos visiting these hidden gems of local food? This is one of them that you can experience for yourself.
Our waitress explained everything is homemade. We got the catfish and she said they made the breading, “Not out of a box.” She was a hoot! She was sassy in that friendly way, making us feel at home. She even said she didn’t cook and that’s why they kept her at the front of the house.
The catfish was delicious and flavorful.
The service was great – friendly and informative. And the atmosphere is…well…it’s hard to put it. I felt like I stepped back in time. Everything was nice quality, but had some years on it. Just felt real and honest.
All around, a great experience.

I got the lunch special, I’m not crazy about rib tips myself but they were great. What I really enjoyed was the pulled pork, it was sooooooo good. I did the medium level sauce and it had a nice amount of zest, I will likely do hot next time. For sure will be getting some more of that pulled pork!

Very sweet people. Mrs Clay serves food with the tenderness of a mother’s love. Been eating there for 25 years or more. Never had a bad meal or experience. These ribs will make you wake-up dreaming about them. Everyone should be buying LOCAL. And there’s not a better place to start! Every year, on my Birthday, I do a special favor for myself, and eat a full slab of pure Heaven. CLAY’S POPEYE’S BBQ should be a chain in everyone’s hometown. It was in Springfield for more than 40 years. Way before that Chicken chain got here. Do yourself a favor, check it out. You won’t be sorry! I would call the flavor: sweet, tangy, dark-red sauce, fall- off- the- bone meat. A Real Blessing a real Delight. And I AIN’T LYING!.

By far my favorite BBQ in Springfield, Illinois. Love the sweet hot “Blazin Heifer Sauce”! The rib tips are my favorite, but the ribs are excellent too. Anyone trying it for the first time I would suggest the combo that includes pork, beef & rib tips. If you like beans with BBQ or you hate beans with your BBQ – GET THE BEANS, they are fantastic.

I’m sorry I must take out my food due to COVID, but it’s not a real inconvenience because the BBQ is SO good. I’ve eaten at their earlier location and now here for 30+ years. I’ve taken slabs of ribs home for parties. The sides are also great, and the people are welcoming and kind. Clay’s is a Springfield institution because the Clay family can cook! It’s a must visit.

I ordered the catfish. Fantastic! I don’t rate high, but this was probably the best catfish I ever had. Cornmeal coating. Delicious.
The peach cobbler is home made and better than I knew cobbler could be.

A great place for BBQ, especially considering the price. For just a few bucks, you get a pile of meat, bread, a side, and a drink. Great sauces, quick service, and plenty of seats round out the experience. On your first trip, you can easily see how this place earned, and keeps, its reputation as a Springfield staple.

We were just there for my Birthday Lunch, it was delicious as usual , and the hospitality can’t be beat . We had all ages in our group of of 10 , from 3yrs , to 81 , and everyone loved their food . We were able to enjoy our food and conversation without feeling hurried , and our drinks were never empty . We love local , and this is one of the best in town !
