Good atmosphere and not so bad food. I liked the cheese balls and paratha but the service is absolutely awful. The parathas came without anything as if you are eating at a no frills dhaba. Even proper plates were not provided and we had to ask for it. There’s only one person serving and they were mostly watching tv. It’s situated next to an awesome place and looks nice itself but the service needs serious overhaul.

We started with the vegetable samosas and they were absolutely delicious. For dinner, we ordered the chicken saag, chicken tandoori, vegetable biryani, and garlic naan. Every single dish was incredible. We’ll definitely be back!

Love this place for years. Love Indian food. Chicken is so juicy and the flavors are awesome. I don’t eat spicy food and if you tell them mild it’s perfect. San Mateo Location has the best hours, San Francisco hours suck.

We came in close to closing time and instead of being treated with disdain we were met with gratitude and respect. The food is great some of the best cuisine I’ve had and the place is comfortable they even give you pillows to rest your back. Overall everything was exceptional and all classic indian cuisines are offered. There’s also a wide variety of beers offered and also a bar adjacent and part of the restaurant (but it was not open when I went). I will be returning to try the lunch buffet!

Clay Oven was a lovely surprise. The food was fresh, the tandoori chicken was tender, and the service was very pleasant. The restaurant wasn’t too crowded for a Wednesday night, and my friend and I were easily able to have a conversation. We shared a couple of dishes and still came home with leftovers. Would happily return.

My wife and I have been coming here since we were dating… Over 25 years…and we’ve always loved everything about it! Wife now happens to work next door… And how lucky we are to have frequent take out! Nicest family, and yummiest food.

I haven’t been here since before 2019. I thought I’d give them another chance.
I probably should have left after having to wait 6 minutes & 2 bell rings….
They have a small lunch buffet that isn’t labeled anywhere.
I did finally get an employee’s attention, who attempted to point out what food was actually in the buffet.
Two bites into butter chicken & I get a bone. Nevermind that the taste of the dish was pretty bad too, and butter chicken is my absolute favorite dish!

This place is an absolute treasure, and it comes down to two simple things: phenomenal food and an owner who treats you like family.
Let’s start with the food. The chicken curry is, without exaggeration, the best I’ve ever had. The chicken is incredibly tender, and the curry itself is a masterpiece – a rich, aromatic, and perfectly balanced sauce that is bursting with flavor without being overwhelmingly spicy (unless you ask for it!). It’s the kind of comforting, soulful dish you crave on a chilly evening. I always make sure to get a side of their fluffy garlic naan to soak up every last drop.
But what truly makes Clay Oven special is the atmosphere, cultivated by the owner. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with a genuine smile. He takes such pride in his restaurant, and it shows. He often walks around to check on tables, share a story, or offer a recommendation. It’s this personal touch that transforms a simple dinner out into a wonderful experience.
If you are looking for authentic, delicious Indian food served with genuine warmth and hospitality, you absolutely must visit Clay Oven. You won’t just leave with a full stomach, but also with a smile. Highly recommended!

Clay Oven Cuisine of India in San Mateo is a fantastic restaurant that offers excellent service, delicious and savory food, and a cozy ambiance that is perfect for both date nights and business meetings. The owner is incredibly attentive and the cook is able to accommodate a wide range of spice levels, from very mild to extremely spicy. The quality of the meat, chicken, and all ingredients is top-notch and the restaurant is always kept clean. Located in a shopping area, the restaurant also plays great Indian music, making for a well-rounded and enjoyable experience. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for delicious Indian cuisine, with an emphasis on the preparation, ambiance, quality of service, flavor and serving size, all of which are the best and perfect.

My husband and I have been enjoying dining at Clay Oven in San Mateo for several months. I love high-quality proteins and highly recommend this tasty Indian restaurant for an outstanding dining experience, especially the tandoori chicken and prawns that are truly exceptional. The next-door bar is also available for evening alcoholic drinks that are serviced in the restaurant.
