It’s a small joint with limited parking and we arrived during peak time on a Sunday, so we anticipated a wait. When we headed in to enter our name no one greeted us or asked if we were in queue. After following someone else to the other side of the counter we were quoted 25 minutes so we decided to hangout in the car (it was raining), and checked in at the 20 minute mark. The hostess unenthusiastically told us she just called our name so we’d have to sit at the counter. Hey, I love counter service and the opening was next to the kitchen so no problem! We sat down and were immediately greeted by a friendly woman who made it clear our server would be over shortly, but she could grab us coffees. Ten minutes later, she inferred no one had stopped by and took our order. We didn’t actually figure out who our server was (I flagged down the busboy for water).
The pancakes are fluffy and the amount of food you get for the price is certainly a value. However, the deep fried breakfast meets, undercooked and under-seasoned home fries, and copiously buttered bread were all mediocre. Our spot at the counter provided entertainment in the form of line cooks and waitresses arguing and flirting. One of the line cooks boldly even took an omelet from the flat top on a spatula and transferred it directly to his palm. Considering he had no gloves…I was impressed he could handle that heat.
Ultimately, the space behind the counter was grimy and disorganized, and that’s not a deal breaker for us unless it describes the whole experience. The woman in the blue polo who grabbed us those coffees was the sole redeeming quality. Otherwise, we wound up waiting 30 minutes for average breakfast grub. Note, the gentleman next to me ordered, received his food, and ate while we waited. I’m sure that this place has either a nostalgic appeal or local following based on the reviews and the crowd, but it didn’t check either box for us.
Still, we go there and have brunch because you can’t beat the low, reasonable prices, the hot brewed coffee, and tasteful and big serving of food. Also, service is prompt and friendly.
I love to get the “Big Daddy” meal which includes pancakes, eggs, bacon, and sausage. You get a lot of food for your money, and you surely won’t leave hungry!
P.S. I believe I witnessed the previous reviewer Karen’s experience. If so, she’s left out a critical point: she and her companion left the restaurant numerous times. Beyond the outside waiting area. I thought she’d left too. Twice. If she felt she had to step away, she should’ve notified the hostess. My BF and I went back for a second visit, and we had another fabulous breakfast. Food and service were both great.
